I decided what to use my ThinkGeek gift certificate on.  I got the Blue Canary in the Outlet by the Light Switch (well, we don't have any outlets next to light switches, but it'll be handy in the kitchen) and a tribble.  The tribble's great.  It's the perfect size and a nice shade of brown, and it purrs when you give it a light smack.  (Batteries included, too.  Whadaya know?)  And the nightlight is a lovely shade of cobalt blue.

Robin informed me yesterday that her husband refers to me as Robin's "anglophile friend."  Which it probably seems that way, given my current obsession with Doctor Who, my lifelong obsession with Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, my love of tea, and longtime desire to visit the British Isles.  But I would not call myself an anglophile.  Not really.  Doctor Who is my current thing, but I was a Trekkie first.  I started drinking tea in Australia, and it's as much a part of my German heritage as peppernuts (which, btw, go very well with tea).  Tolkien is recognized as the grandfather of modern fantasy, and C.S. Lewis... well, he's C.S. Lewis.  All-around genius writer and apologist.  And as for visiting the British Isles, that's 'cause I've already checked off visiting Germany (though I would very much like to go back).

Still, I squee'd pretty hard when I learned that the city chorus has been invited to sing at Southwark Cathedral in London next summer.  It'd be $3,000, but I could swing that.  I really could.  I have no idea if it includes any "wandering around the area for fun" time, but I kinda don't care.  If I wanted, I could probably find a way to arrive early or stay behind and do some exploring on my own.  It remains to be seen if the chorus board of directors will even go for it.

I go to the best places on choir tour.  *g*

Today, being Friday, was a half day, and I decided on a whim to get an oil change.  Good thing, too.  The salesman noted that one of my tires had a bubble.  Not a bad one, but I went ahead and took it where I'd bought the tires, and got a "nearly new" replacement for cheap.  (They rotated my tires, too.)  Next week, I plan on getting one of the wheels fixed.  Dang it, but that car is mine and I'm gonna take care of it!

Oh!  And we've seen the first two episodes of Doctor Who!  To which I say, holy cow!  So much going on, it was hard to track.  Was it just me, or did this two-parter seem a little fractious?  I know Moffat's setting up the season, but it was hard to keep track of all the elements.  Nonetheless, the cinematography is getting better and better.  The Silence were absolutely freaky.  There was the usual awesome dialogue.  And I still can't believe that Nixon has been in the TARDIS!  Using him as both plot device and comic relief was a clever move.

Also, the dorkier they make Rory, the hotter he gets.  That polyester suit and those horn-rim glasses?  Smokin'.  (River, on the other hand, looked ludicrous in the jacket and dress she wore in that scene.)  Rory altogether was wonderful.  He's a great straight man.  Great comic timing.  The Doctor, Amy, and River, being insane, need him for a foil, and he does it so well.  (Also, I have a secret belief that Rory travelled the most during their three month reconnoissance mission.  After all, he lasted the longest, had the most marks, and was the one who said "They're in every state.")

The opinion among our group is that Amy's indeterminate pregnancy is evidence of time being rewritten.  It will, of course, be important other ways, but since "Time can be rewritten" has been a theme through last season (and first appeared in the Library two-parter), and we've actually witnessed the Doctor die, I'm thinking that instead of rebooting the shattered universe, we'll be putting it back on track this season.  Personally, I thought it was really cute that the reason Amy told the Doctor first was that she was worried about Vortex-induced birth defects.  And that Rory wasn't doing the whole freak-out cliche when faced with fatherhood.  "I'm a nurse!  I'm good with pregnancies."  It was so sane.

Really, the whole Amy/Rory relationship... Even when Rory "wasn't sure" who Amy declared her love to, he was bound and determined to save her.  And Amy's reaction to his doubts being a kiss and, "I always call you 'stupid'!" -- it's true!  Followed by, "It's a figure of speech, moron!" The way Amy talked to the Doctor, she was talking to a friend, not a crush -- looking for a confidante, not a lover.  It was refreshing.

I was amazed how flirty the Doctor was with River.  She says he doesn't know her, but holy cow, he knows her.  "River, have you got the scanner working?"  "I hate him."  "No, you don't."  He wasn't in the room for that.  He was thoroughly enjoying pushing her buttons.  Yet when she kissed him, he did a lovely flail.

River is lying.  She and the Doctor can't meet strictly "back to front" because if they did, there wouldn't be any point to comparing diaries.  The only way comparing diaries works is if some of their past is mutual at any given point.  It might be that they meet mostly back-to-front, or that their most important moments happen that way.  And this is the Doctor.  He doesn't do anything in the right order, even if the right order is backwards.  The first time he met her might have been the last time she met him, but that's all we know for sure.  River said, "Rule one: the Doctor lies," but I'd bet anything she's just as bad.

It was fun seeing Mark Sheppard in a heroic part.  American TV likes him as a bad guy (well, he's so good at it!), so it was a nice change.  Canton Everett Delaware III is one of the more ludicrous names I've heard, but oh well.  He was intelligent, crafty, and capable of recovering from TARDIS shock in record time.  He misdirected the FBI for three months.  He had a gun but wasn't trigger happy, and got information out of a Silent before shooting it.  His American accent slipped up a couple times, but when it was there, it was good.  They can bring him back any time they like.

None of us had any viable theories about the little girl.  I'm at a loss.  The only thing I can think of is that she's River somehow.  Here's hoping that Moffat manages to make us all go "OF COURSE!" when all is revealed.

So yes.  Eagerly awaiting the rest of the season!

yay, geekiness, doctor who, car, silliness, britishness
