Has it been a month since I posted here? Sorry. Here's a quick update, to explain what I've been up to over the past week. I'll skip the whole semester ending thing.

• Playing Tennis. I'm 1-1 in the town rec league I'm playing in. Won 6-0, 6-0 in week one and lost 1-6, 2-6 today. But I think today's match was closer than the score would indicate. ( Read more... )

1. It's witch's tit cold here. It's supposed to get below zero tonight in real temperature with a wind chill in the negative double digits. I've been stoking the fire all day.

Some time between when I walked the dog this morning a little after 5:30 a.m. and when I went out to start my car at 6:30 a.m., it started snowing. My first thought was, "It's the first snow of the year. How quaint." I went and told L. I thought it would probably be over soon. I guess it's going to get serious about fall weather now in Western Mass. This morning, L. had to scrape the frost off her windshield before going in to school. It was the first time she'd had to break out the scraper this year. The outside thermometer read 29 degrees when I came downstairs. L. and Sprout were already back in. On Tuesday, I saw Orion in the sky on my early morning walk. To me, it meant the days were growing shorter. Because I wasn't used to seeing that many stars in the morning. Usually, the sky had turned a little more opaque, allowing only the brighter stars and the planets to shine through.

So, after a January thaw that saw the thermometer reading on the Greenfield Savings Bank sign downtown at 60 degrees on Saturday, today, we got winter again. We got the call at 5:30 a.m. that L.'s school was cancelling for a snow day. This morning was cold. I got up and closed all the storm windows. The thermostat said it was 62 degrees. Colder than we usually keep it in winter, but we haven't turned on the furnace yet. People keep asking me about the hurricanes, since my parents are down in Florida. Ivan gave the peninsula a miss -- Pensacola got hit, but that might as well be another state. It rained most of the day yesterday. In the morning, L. went to Buckland for a Mt. Holyoke alumni gathering, where they visited the birthplace of college founder Mary Lyon, along with some current students. I stayed home and moped around the house.

Looks like Ivan is going to miss Central Florida after all. It may still end up giving the folks in the panhandle a second scare after Frances, but at least it doesn't seem to be bearing down on my parents right now. That's a relief.
