It worked!

I still have the two computers connected for now whilst I check I have everything. Big Brother came up trumps- he suggested I get a router (£42 from the PC repair shop next to work!)  rather than use the external modem  I'd had for 5 years. Hopefully over the Bank Holiday weekend, Big Brother and I will swap over from my ancient 2002 XP pooter to the new whizzy Windows 7 Dell one....keep your fingers crossed and wish us luck.

Guess what folks, i'm back in  the library setting yahoo to daily digest and saying that this time the beloved pooter really is dead. i'm just waiting for the repair shop to open in 10 minutes. Okay so 2 weeks ago I had the pooter in the PC shop- a faulty capacitor apparently- easily fixed and no problem. This weekend I got my external hard drive out of its box ready to plug in and start transferring data. I turn the computer on....and it's dead again. Well, I'm back briefly- off to Chester after lunch. The visit to my brother's went well. I helped him to de-clutter 5 boxes of gribbage from his study. We shredded and recycled as we went. He's actually getting rid of some books! Shock horror! These boxes have been in the study since he moved in 5 years ago- and there are at least 7 more to go. But ( Read more... )

Okay, so I am in Halifax for the weekend on a bookbinding workshop and I check in with my PC repair shop- all is not lost! It is as we thought- the power supply. But being an e-machines case the new power supply unit is slightly larger. So I will need to buy a new outer case. Makes me feel  alot better about it all. Sounds fine to me. *whimpers* beloved pooter died last night at 21.20...monitor just went black. Okay it's done that once or twice before- but not for ages-, but after switching off at the plug and re-booting it started up fine. Not last night. Nada, zip, zero. The socket works, cos the monitor stand by light is on and the printer works.
