"There she goes," McGee says as Agent Lee does that casual zip from the elevators to the spare conference rooms over by the stairs behind myself and McGabby.

"So she does," I say, one eye on her, one on the stuff scrolling across my screen about the guy Gibbs told us to investigate. And one eye on Agent Lee, did I mention that? Because there's something -

Ziva snorts. I think it's a snort. Maybe it's something else entirely - like the first two letters in cheese and chutzpah - they only look alike on paper. And in English.

But it's all wrong. Not the spelling, I'm good at that. Agent Lee, I mean.

Something's rubbing me the wrong way about all this. And if I said so, Ziva would make at least three remarks all dripping with double entredes. And maybe one or two comments with deliberately-chosen bad English.

And Palmer would break my nose. And I'd have to follow that with an 'On your six, boss,' because Gibbs would want us out the door and heading down to - re-check the monitor - there.

And its not a physical rub anyway. Not that I've ever wondered about what sort of backrubs Michelle Lee gives to those she deems worthy of them, oh no. Honest.

No, it's...

Yeah, that's it. What grandpa Tony DiNozzo would've called Ventre, I'm sure. Ventre and not Budello, for sure. Well, more sure than I can be about why his dad named him that in Boston.

Yeah, being an Antonio when his friends and neighbors were laying down their lives to kick the Axis into unconditional surrender - not anyone's idea of a good time.

Question is, if I can feel this in my gut, why's Gibbs doing nothing? His gut doesn't let him stay quiet, not ever.

So maybe I'm overreacting. Maybe. Be understandable if I was. Working my regular hours, plus my undercover work with Jeanne. And folks'd get suspicious mighty quick if I didn't at least try to have a life outside the office. Oh if only they knew.

But they don't, which is the point.

That's when Gibbs walks in and tells McGee and Ziva to head over to the witness' house, while he's going to head over and have a chat with our prime suspect. And as for me, Gibbs tells me to finish what I'm doing and go home and rest. It's hat hair! Why does nobody believe me?

Maybe he does, and there's another reason why he gave me that order.

Jeanne didn't call and say I have a doctor's appointment, did she? Nah, this is just classic Gibbs keeping us on our toes because we don't know what he's going to say next.

I wait til they're all out the doors and off to where they're heading, before I leave my desk and head around the stairs and open the door to spare Conference Room B (or is it R?) just enough to slip inside.

"Agent Lee," I say, and she looks up at me from all the case files Director Sheppard asked her to go through.

"Agent DiNozzo?" Agent Lee asks me in turn. "Did you need something?"

"Actually I was thinking you did. Anything I can help you with?"

"No, it's okay. These folders only look thicker than they really are." Like some people I knew.

"I wasn't referring to the folders. If you want to talk, I'm here. I want to help."

"You've got a lot on your plate already, don't you?" Agent Lee asks me, and I detect a note of concern - and fear and worry both hiding behind concern's apron. But at least she's not denying that something's bothering her, something's hanging over her.

Something not good.

I nod. "Yeah." Hell yeah. Oodles. "But that won't stop me from doing what I can."

Her face relaxes - so this is what Palmer sees? nice! - and her eyes thank me as a load comes a little off her back.

Not a problem. That's what I'm here for: to help young ladies in distress (longstanding family tradition, really). It's part of why I wear the badge and put in the hours.
