alternate title:
"Píngguŏ and oranges." Summary: At the close of a case, Dani's asked a question, and asks one in return, while Crews watches and perhaps is a bit rash.
Fandom: Life
Characters: Dani, Charlie, *
Author: Keenir.
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: Only the episodes where Charlie eats fruit around Dani. ;D
Disclaimer: I own none of them. Seriously!
* = I deliberately left it vague as to who Agent Chen is...mostly because this was supposed to be a drabble, but it didn't grow into a full fic.
if you consider this Agent Chen to be the one from Numb3rs (portrayed by Kelly Hu), then I don't own the character.
if you consider this Agent Chen to be the one from the Singapore Three series, I also don't own that character.
if you consider this Agent Chen to be someone new, I own the character, but am happy to share.
Note: There is a translation at the bottom of this post. source: the book The World's Major Languages by Bernard Comrie. I was leafing through that book, and I found this sentance being glossed, and my Dani muse inisted on this being written.

Here in one of the marketplaces of Chinatown, officers Dani and Crews stood alongside Agent Chen, as the three of them watched Bobby and some uniforms from other branches of law enforcement do their jobs once the hard work was done. Done by officers Dani and Crews and Agent Chen.
Malcolm Stark, a people smuggler who had tried to make it in the big leagues, was being hauled away after he collapsed (or fell, depending where you stood) into a short stack of varied seafood.
"You did okay," Dani said.
Agent Chen accepted the kernel of compliment in the guarded almost gruff statement. She's more like her father than she cares to admit, Agent Chen mused. "Couldn't have done it without that arm of yours." You brought Stark down, quite literally.
Dani shrugged.
"Just one question."
"Go."
"Tā chī bu chī píngguŏ?" Agent Chen asked.
"Oh I like apples just fine," Dani replied.
Crews nodded. "Why do you ask?" curious, and knowing politeness dictated he ask it before his partner dragged it out of Agent Chen.
"I've just never seen anyone hurl an apple with such violence before," Agent Chen replied. Holding up both hands, quickly added, "Stark deserved worse."
"You wanna know why?" Dani asked.
Agent Chen nodded.
"Can you throw a durian that far?"
"Well, no."
And that was the only other option. "Neither can I," Dani said.
