Coda to Protest...

While Granger had arrived from a different direction, Don and the others (in one spot) would be here soon, as they were carpooling over here to play cards. So Colby and Alan were alone for now.

"What's on your mind?" Alan asked, watching the younger man admire the shelves and their contents; Alan knew from experience what someone looked like when they were watching you out the corner of your eye, Like you right now.

Colby didn't answer, and looked as awkward as he was feeling. You're my boss's dad, and much as I trust him, there's something... and resolved to say it. Colby straightened and looked directly at Alan. "You ever hear of a guy named Bonhoeffer?"

"Yeah," Alan said, not sure where that'd come from, but he'd had stranger conversations - mostly with his own kids, granted. "German guy, refused asylum from the Nazis."

Colby nodded. "He said 'Cheap grace is the mortal enemy of our church. Our struggle today is for costly grace.'"

"Didn't know that."

"Now you do."

"Yeah." Still haven't said anything. "Something on your mind?" Alan asked.d

Another nod. "When you were a protester, did you know anyone who went to war?"

"Yeah. We called them 'fellow Americans.'"

Colby shook his head. "No, I mean personally."

"Then no. I didn't."

"Then you never struggled," Colby said with the voice of one who struggles every day. "You never -"

"Wrong is wrong," Alan said.

"And you had nobody who disagreed with you - well, nobody whose opinion you valued." Colby walked to the door, seeing himself out - before I'm kicked out. "Just one question."

"Shoot, officer," Alan said.

"Even if none of them were your friends, did you help or even talk to anyone who came back from Vietnam?"
