Nikki raised an eyebrow at her colleague here in the FBI cafeteria. "Uh, thanks, Matt," she said to Matt Li, though not entirely sure why that had been his statement. Particularly after she'd just finished gushing about Ian (well, praising him in her own way).
"You're welcome," Matt said. "Next time you see Ian, give him my regards, will you?"
Suspecting this was connected - in some way - to the trust comment, Nikki nodded. "Sure thing. Any particular message?"
"Not really. I'm glad he's happy, but that needn't be the message."
Wait a minute, Nikki thought to herself. 'I'm glad you're happy' is what I said about a year after I broke up with my boyfriend in college. "I thought Ian broke up with Alice," was all she said.
"You're not wrong," Matt said.
Nikki needed a moment to visualize that in her brain. "You and Ian and Alice?"
Matt nodded.
I'd rather have either of you with us, than Granger - to hell with what Liz says! And she said so, in appropriate words and low decibels: this is a private conversation, after all.
