I'm reading this book, A Thousand Days of Wonder, about a scientist's "study" of his daughter's first 1,000 days.

He talks about synesthesia (simplest definition: mixing of the senses) in infants, how their world is a jumble of intermingling senses for the first few months. Shapes become colors (a triangle may be experienced as red, for example). ( Read more... )

The first time I met a dog from a fight bust was in the quarantine kennel at the shelter where I volunteered. I had been given the privilige of bestowing treats and love to the dogs languishing in the "bite kennel". Some were there because of court orders, others had bitten people or animals. I was out visiting Flo's grave when Flower (see below) noticed me sitting in a spot where humans do not sit normally. She ambled over, grunting softly until she was standing right next to me. There is a certain kind of irony in Australia's plan to cull 2/3 of the feral camel population.

There are approximately 1 million feral camels in Australia. Their ancestors were brought over in the mid 1800s because of desert conditions. Sheep are also an imported, non-native species brought over in the late 1700's.  There are between 100-120 ( Read more... )

This guy has been sentenced to 300 hours of community service and a year on probation because he left water for illegal immigrants traveling through Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge.
