Thomas Tomkins, the last Elizabethan
Hey local folks, I have a concert this coming Sunday. It's all music by Thomas Tomkins, a late 16th/early 17th-century Cornish-Welsh composer-- it's mostly sacred choral anthems with accompaniment by viols and sackbuts, but we'll also be doing one of his 6-part viol fantasias, and I think the sackbuts are playing some consort pieces as well. I had a meeting with my pregnant committee member today. She's still working on the book that was supposed to be done last week, so this may have been my last meeting with her before the baby comes. I felt woefully underprepared, because while I have acquired nearly everything on my reading list for my topic with her, I hadn't read as much as I'd ( Read more... ) -

I passed the dreaded Musicology Department German Proficiency Exam (PhD portion)! Yay! The last administrative thing I need to do is officially declare my minor, and then I can start rolling on the whole exam process ( Read more... ) -

The Day From Hell is almost over. Thank IPU.
So, between the hours of 8 am and 12 pm today, I took two midterms* and gave a 50-minute lecture on Carmen and The Pirates of Penzance*** to a class of 140ish. Then I sat through a 3-hour musicology seminar**, and went to a 90-minute AI meeting.
