Dear Bioware

Dear BioWare,

We really had some fun didn't we? Remember how I would laugh every time Minsc yelled "Go for the eyes, Boo!"? And I still have the tiniest crush on Bastila Shan (Jennifer Hale has a lovely voice, but I think it's just that touch sexier with an accent).

You got big and famous. Somehow the magic got lost. It can happen in all those team meetings and under all those expectations that come with success. Maybe it was when I hit that first ogre boss in Dragon Age, realized that I really didn't every want to have to go through it again, and, therefore, would never start another character. Maybe it was when you killed Shepard at the beginning of Mass Effect 2. Maybe it was even back when Bastila turned to the Dark Side and my crush went from huge to tiny in a few seconds. Still, until recently, I thought the magic might still be there.

But, by now, it's clear that we've grown apart. You took Mass Effect off into some direction I can't even comprehend. Dragon Age 2 seemed - from a distance, admittedly - like some kind of senior project for an English major. I thought Star Wars: The Old Republic might rekindle the old flame, but, honestly, Bioware, you've gotten so serious. Not that you haven't always been a bit on the serious side, but, when we first met, you were still capable of having fun. Somewhere along the way I think you forgot how to do that.

It's Star Wars. It's grand. It's epic. I actually believed you might be able to build a world where being a Jedi would be fun and exciting. But balancing the class I play in a way that seems to only address complaints from PvP, not being able to change clothes (if you can find an outfit you like in the first place) without a huge bill, and a crafting system that's really just grinding the RNG aren't much fun. Even so, I thought we might still work it out, but, it was a little thing that made it clear to me we're not headed in the same direction anymore. You made my Jedi so he can't jump the 10 foot gap between him and that datacron. It's almost like you're telling me you don't think I could be a Jedi.

It was fun while it lasted. I'm sure you'll go on to more great things. I'll always remember Candlekeep fondly.

Sincerely,

-RG

[I drafted this to express my disillusionment with BioWare. I'm still not certain if I'll keep playing SWtOR long-term. There's the 1.2 patch in the works which may address some of my complaints. Regardless, it is clear SWtOR is the last BioWare game I'll ever play.]
