This is such a lovely novella. It's told from the perspective of young Barney, for whom his family is the center of his world. Barney adores his step-mother and is a bit in awe of both his older sisters, loud future novelist Tabitha and silent bookish Troy. The plot was so tempting, so much like something I once came up with that I couldn't resist giving Cashore ("Graceling") another chance. This time in English and in audio, both things likely to help. So it was... ok? But I have been reading things like "Solitude" and "The Matter of Seggri", which are short stories that she wrote years ago so forgive me if I'm a little disappointed at the lack of depth in this.
