The library roof leaked badly in the storm on Tuesday, so we've been closed all week while that gets cleaned up. The damage mitigation company has been hard at work drying things out and repairing walls and ceilings. My car seems to be okay. It started right up this morning and didn't give me any trouble while I was out running errands. The brakes aren't quite as responsive as they were; I don't know if they just need to dry out further or if the water did something nasty to them. Well, that was one of the stupider things I've ever done. Note to self: when the vehicles going through the flooded street in front of you are SUVs, that doesn't necessarily mean your car will make it. Still at my sister's. I was hoping/expecting to go home today, but the situation appears to have deteriorated there. Still no power and phone service, and the local sewage plant had an explosion last night, which brought water restrictions (and possible lack of sewage?) to a broad swath of the county--including my community ( Read more... )

The worst of Sandy is definitely past, although the winds are still a bit strong. We got very little rain, but the storm surge was horrific. The power stayed on here at my sister's, but my neighbor reports that it went out at our building. I just moved my car to the top of the parking lot (after checking with the super about which space to park in).

Why? Because it's low tide right now, and the water was still over my tires to the bottom of the rim.

Waterproof shoes don't actually help when the water is deeper than the shoes are tall. I hope I didn't ruin my orthotics.

It was absolutely pouring down rain late this afternoon--not just pouring, teeming. It had mostly stopped by 5:00 when I left work, but the tide must have been in, which means the storm drains were backed up. There was up to a foot of water on the roads. It's a wonder I didn't kill my engine driving through some of the "puddles."

Last night, one of the cleaning crew left water running on the second floor. It overflowed the bucket and came down thru the ceiling by the reference desk. This is the fourth (correction: fifth) time in ten years we've had a thru-the-ceiling flood near (or over) that desk. Once again, we lost *no* books and *no* equipment.
