Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, The sunlight streamed brightly through the window, as it fell on her side alone, cutting him off in the cool shade. He stared at her trying to gather in all the soft slopes and smooth angles the light had shown on her. Her fingers played at the condensation melting off her glass, dripping to the table. Gabriel was mesmerized by the light and the moisture and just the thought that it seemed to be Maya’s hand causing such a miraculous thing.
Her voice hummed in and out as he sat half listening to her story, catching the important bits and storing them for later. He liked that the sound of her voice seemed calming. Liked the way it reminded him of home and the soft voices that would come through the walls while he tried to fall asleep. He put his hand close to hers on the table and listened to her words.
“I gave up everything to protect those of my loved ones who could still be hurt by me, by this.” Her hand made a sweeping motion over her body that distracted Gabriel. “I went to Venezuela to fine refuge” she smiled weakly whispering her last word “sanctuaria”.
Gabriel nodded along to the sound of her voice, catching that last word, finding the root in it and translating for him self. He repeated “Sanctuary”
Maya smiled softly and continued. “So my time spent at the convent -
“I’m sorry?” Gabriel stared at her in amazement.
“Si, I went to a convent when I left my home. I studied to be a nun.” She blushed and turned her gaze back to the window.
“Sister Maya…” He contemplates testing the taste of it on his tongue. His mouth began to water.
“Oh please, I did not make it that far. No, my brother came to get me soon after I started. I thought I’d be safe there, that the evil inside me wouldn’t be able to defile such a holy place.”
“It doesn’t work that way Maya. It’s your power. It’s not good or evil, its just apart of you.”
“What does that say about me, that I kill so many people?” He noticed her voice shook slightly and the hairs on his arms began to rise. “It says that you don’t have control yet. But I could help you with that.” He reached over brushing his hand over her dark hair.
She bowed her head, the movement sending tendrils of hair flowing through his fingers and obscuring her face. “You are helping me, Gabriel, by taking me to see Dr. Suresh. I know he can help me get rid of this sickness.”
Gabriel’s hands tightened slightly in her hair as he listened to her let out a sigh. He let his fingers caress the scalp and pulled away when she started to lean into his touch. Maya flushed and pushed her hair behind her ear.
“So” she began, “what do you do for work in America?”
Gabriel avoided her eyes and readjusted himself in this seat. It didn’t help he couldn’t get comfortable with her so close to him.
“I uh helped Dr. Suresh with his research.” He turned back to watch her eyes as they widen with interest, his fist clenched. He didn’t want to talk about Suresh anymore. “I also restore time pieces in my spare time.” Her forehead crinkled and he sighed tiredly. “Uh I fixed watches and clocks. My ability also helps me to figure things out. Take things apart and fix them.”
She nodded politely. “We don’t really use watches where I come from, but we have sundials!” Now his face crinkled as he tried not to laugh at her, but his cheeks burned with the effort.
“Gabriel?” He heard it in her voice. She sounded amused.
“H’m?” He tried to give an innocent look, but it didn’t quite pull it off.
Maya ducked her head to get a better look at his face.” It’s okay to laugh Gabriel. It was a joke. Of course we have watches.” She leaned back in her chair stretching arms over head grunting slight. “Escusa mi” She closed her eyes smiling. The sun was in her hair making it sparkle and shimmer. Gabriel’s fingers began to ache. He shook his hand and rubbed it down his torso. Closing his eyes he imagined the sounds she was making were because of him.
