When he woke up in the morning she was already gone and that made the ball in his stomach roll as he got up to wash. The smell of them was everywhere mixed in with the odor of stale sheets and dirty carpet. He wondered how this night compared to the many others this the dirty motel room had witnesses.
Just another random fuck, just like all the others, only she didn’t want you enough to fuck like all the others before. And why not, Maya was a beautiful, smart girl who, under normal circumstances, would have had nothing to do with a meek lonely watchmaker.
He scrubbed harder as his skin reddened under the hot spry of water, wishing it was just as easy to wash away the memories, so fresh in his mind’s eye. She made him feel like and idiot. She did. He tried to give her something, share something with her and she refused it, threw it back in his face like some insulting thing. Well, he thought himself a fool for tying.
When he got out of the shower he walked straight to his bag on the table avoiding the beds and got dressed quickly. He didn’t know what he’d do when he finally saw her again and he didn’t want to think about it. Just stick to the plan and get back to Suresh, he’ll have the answers. Pulling the door opened, he stepped into the glare of the sunlight, eyes squinted against it.
He walked out with his bag over slung over his shoulder and scanned the parking lot for the car feeling a stab of panic when he didn’t find it right away. His mouth puckered as he bit into the inside of his mouth and his lungs filled painfully with air. Turning, he trotted down the walk way to the head office to check with the clerk.
As he turns to step into “check-in” he sees the car parked off to the side of lot, under a tree. He sees movement in the back seat. She sits back and catches his eyes, before averting them to look at something in the distance. Fine, he could play that game.
Walking over, he wordlessly opened the door to throw his bag in next to her before slamming it shut as he took the passenger seat in front of her, grunting a low good morning. She sat up some, watching him from the back seat.
“Gabriel--”
“Where’s your brother?”
She frowned at him a little. “He’s saying good-bye or getting food, or whatever, I don’t know. I wanted to -“
“Why’d you move the car?” He interrupted before she could finish. She let out a sigh before shuffling around in the backseat. “Gabriel, I want to talk to you about … last night.” He smiled; he could almost hear her blushing.
“Oh? Well, you don’t have to. I understand.” He bowed his head slightly his features melting into a bashful expression, making sure to catch her reflection in the mirror.
“You do?” he watched her face crease in confusion, before she took a breath and continued, “Gabriel last night was … unexpected and different and--”
“I’m sorry it went that far.” He spoke over her again.
“You are?” She sounded disappointed and he felt his cheeks burning.
Just then Alejandro came into view, his gate steady and strong as he headed for the car. “Its okay, we don’t have to talk about it. It happened, it’s over … you got it out of your system. We can move on.” he shrugged his shoulder and settled into his seat.
She made scoffing sound and he felt her knee hit the back of his chair when her brother finally opened the driver’s side door. He slipped in to the seat avoiding his sister’s gaze while giving Gabriel a sideways glance. He started the car and pulled out of the parking lot. Ale and Maya began to argue and Gabriel turned his head toward the window and tried to sleep.

The car pulled to a slow stop into a gas station when Gabriel woke again. The sun was high in the sky and he was already soaked with sweat. Ale looked a Gabriel then leaned back to talk to his sister. Her voice came back deep and sleep ruffled. Gabriel pulled at the moist material of his shirt as they talked on, listening to the bits of tension in their conversation. He sniffed in bitter amusement and caught Ale’s eye for a brief moment before his mouth twitched and he relaxed back against the car door.
Ale’s face twisted into a sneer before throwing his shoulder into the door as he exited.
“He seems agitated.” He turned around in his seat to look at her. “Was it something I said?” He smirked a little, but his smile faded at the look on her face and he remembered he was angry with her. He leaned back again putting his foot up on the dashboard, and began stroking the stubble oh his chin. He felt her knee in his back again and glanced in the mirror when she unsubtly did it again.
“Do you mind?” He caught her eyes in the reflection as she shook her head, mumbling something in Spanish.
“What was that?” he said with a bit of a snap.
“I called you an ass!”
He swiveled in his chair peeking over the headrest, “I’m sorry?”
“That would be a nice start!”
“What? You want me to apologize, after what you did last night?” His voice started to rise, cracking slightly in frustration, while his mouth twisted in anger.
“How dare you!” She yelled, hitting the back of his seat again. “No matter what you might think about me and where I come from, I am not simple. And I do not do thinks like that with just anyone, Gabriel! I trusted you!” Her eyes were glassy and he felt a pain in his stomach as the hairs on the back of his neck began to rise.
He took several deep breaths before continuing, blinking his eyes furiously. “Okay Maya, calm down. Your brother …” It was a full minute before she realized what she was doing and stopped; collecting herself. The feeling passed and he felt a little better when she did, pressing his cheek into the headrest, catching his own breath. “Y-you trust me?”
She said nothing but looked down at the buckle of an unused seatbelt. Letting out a sigh she leaned her head back against her seat, looking up at the ceiling, lips pursed as she chewed on the inside of her mouth.
“Maya …” a strong breeze drifted in through the window, mingling in her hair. He watched her eyes closes as she shook her head back and forth sucking on her teeth.
“How could you say something like that? I would not do that with just anyone. I have not done that with anyone else.”
Gabriel felt his jaw drop opened and all he could do was stare at her. She had been a novice … Is she truly? He watched her watch him, working her lip while she waited for him to respond. She shook her head letting out a short breath through her nose. “Dios”, she whispered under her breath, but he caught it and leaned into the back of the seat again, continuing to stare.
“I - I’m sorry …” he stuttered. “I thought you were playing with me. I didn’t know what to think honestly. But if it makes you feel any better, then I want you to know that I’ve never …” he nodded, “done anything like that with anyone before ... ever.” His mouth set into a thin line as he looked at everything but her.
Her face clouded with confusion as his burned with embarrassment and then she smiled and suddenly there was light. “Really?” she said scrunching her face, as a funny smile played on her lips. He nodded pressing his fingers into warm patches of skin over his cheekbones. “What kind of person would I be if I lied about something like that? It’s not even a flattering lie.” He pressed his face into the cushion, staring out the driver’s side window.
“It’s the truth, Gabriel and I appreciate it. Truth be told, I think it’s beautiful, the idea of you being untouched.” She pulled her lips into her mouth and released them with a fresh coat of soft moisture. She smiled at him again, putting her bare feet up against the medium. sighing deeply before looking out the window again. He leaned over in his chair catching the glimmer of sweat collecting at her neck and shoulders. He twisted more in his chair and his knees hit against the medium brushing against the gear shift. He stared down at her feet.
“Where’d your brother go?”
“I think he’s not feeling well from last night, I guess.” She mumbled something in Spanish before turning back to look at him. Her smile grew as she watched his gaze travel slowly over her body. “I told him didn’t care that he was sick; he was still going to drive because it was his own fault.”
“So that’s what you were arguing about?”
“Among other things,” she gave him a significant look and he blushed.
“You didn’t -”
“No! No, I didn’t. It’s none of his business.” She said shaking her head furiously, wild look in her eye. She laughed a little and the sound caught his ear. He tried to move closer but his knee brushed her foot and she stopped laughing. She stared at him as his hand hovered over her leg. His fingers flex and he brushes his palm over the top of her foot, resting it on her ankle. She shivered slightly and pulled her foot away.
“I’m going to use the rest stop while I can. It might be a while before we see another one.” She spoke as she leaned over to put her feet back into her shoes.
“That’s a good idea.” He said clearing his throat. “You go ahead and I’ll get some gas.” He watched her pull her hair into a loose bun as she walked off toward the shop. "Maya wait!" He rushed over to her nearly knocking her over in his haste.
“What is it, Gabriel?” she was breathing head again.
He lifted his hand and pushed a stray lock of her hair behind her ear. He stared at her resting his hand on her strong shoulder, kneading it slightly, before letting it trail down her arm. He stopped at her hand; gripping it in his own. “Nothing.”
She looked down as their fingers interlocked, her mouth working like she wanted to do something with it but she didn’t know what. She let out a breathy laugh and squeezed his hand. “I’ll see you when I get back, querido.” She smiled at him before turning to head for the gas station.
“All mine” he whispered as the wind picked up again.
