Он знал от греков: суть империй - в спешке,
флегматикам не достаётся власть,
будь Демосфен - Сенат каменноух,
и он рычал: "Да сгинет Карфаген!"
Он знал: слепец, что в прахе ищет злато,
берёт союзно золото и прах,
и если строить Рим - то строить за день.

My live telephone swings crippled to solitude
two feet from my ear; as so often and so often,
I hold your dialogue away to breathe-
still this is love, Old Cato forgoing his wife,
then jumping her in thunderstorms like Jupiter Tonans;
his forthrightness gave him long days of solitude,
then deafness changed his gifts for rule to genius.
Cato knew from the Greeks that empire is hurry,
and dominion never goes to the phlegmatic-
it was hard to be Demosthenes in his stone-deaf Senate:
"Carthage must die," he roared...and Carthage died.
He knew a blindman looking for gold
in a heap of dust must take the dust with the gold,
Rome, if built at all, must be built in a day.
