TVD & The Originals

I think I'm just going to indefinitely revive the disclaimer that I put on my very first post about The Originals, which is that I understand these shows are Problematic (TM) and I am willing to stipulate that you win at Not Liking This Problematic Thing. Comments informing me of why I am wrong to like a show, storyline, or character will remain ( Read more... )

TESSA SHOULD STAY FOREVER. YES.

What she wants is to feel both wanted and needed, which is pretty much the opposite of being “free,” as she claims she wants.

Ah this is a really amazing insight! So true. Soooooooo true. I guess she wants to be free in so far as she wants to be prioritised over what she considers to be trivial things, like their ~home and ~politics and Marcel's ~empire. She wants to be free from an environment where those are the overriding goals that define everyone's lives.

but you get the sense that it’s even more fun for him to do - being able to put on a theatrical show of power is all the leverage he really has against Klaus, who is stronger, invulnerable, and uninhibited.

YES! Fandom seemed to have the wrong impression of this, Imo. Elijah can be as badass as you like, but his theatrical demonstration was a pretty hollow thing, tbh. it happened because Klaus ~allowed it to happen.

TESSA 5EVA. I had my first weird run-in with the fourth wall over her? I made a quick Tumblr post when I figured out why I recognized the actress from another show and she liked the post and it was like I GOT CAUGHT FANGIRLING! but I really enjoy the character so I don't care.

Yeah, I feel as if what Rebekah wants is not to feel as if she is in this position of dependence and need? And I think she's learned, to some very crude degree, that in order to get the acknowledgement that would tip the scales a little more in her favor wrt power players like Klaus (and to a lesser extent, wannabes like Elijah), she has to be able to walk away from the table - and more importantly, she needs to prove to herself that she can walk away, both for personal satisfaction and ( ... )

through that we got a few looks into what Rebekah wants and what she thinks she wants. What she wants is to feel both wanted and needed, which is pretty much the opposite of being “free,” as she claims she wants.

I think both things sort of work together...this really really resonated and then I see it's the main thing you've already discussed in comments! But I think when you've been trapped in relationships where you always feel more invested, almost like your love is cheap for the simple fact that it can be counted on, that even though the obvious #1 thing you want is to feel as wanted and needed as you want and need, the eternal disappointment and heartache make you wish you could be free, that you could just not care.

So yeah I can see it being a power play that she tells herself is a desperate attempt to break free from what will only ever be more disappointment/heartache, while she's also, of course, hoping it works.

ILU. I think this needs to be tattooed on my LJ.

They are totally enjoying sniping at each other in safety.

I loved this, tbh. I would watch them snipe at each other for 22 more episodes.

the mommy figure who will see him the way he wants to be seen (and conveniently can’t kill him)

BWAH. Those Mikaelson boys and their mommy issues. Totally agree with your Haley thoughts - she definitely has Elijah's number, and the ability to play him as successfully as Klaus and Katherine have before her.

and while he certainly deserves it, she’s set up to end up missing any signals that he’s not the only one who deserves it.Ooooh, interesting. I hope she does learn that Kieran knew the truth about Sean and kept it a secret to "protect" her. That would make for an interesting family battle ( ... )

1000% done.

ha, agreed, and I'm liking our odds of getting exactly that.

When Kieran challenges Klaus, "unless you're planning to kill all of us," I don't think he means "the people in this room." I think he means all the power players in the city of New Orleans. Even an Original couldn't slaughter that many cops and community leaders and city councilors without being run out of town.

Well, an Original couldn't, but Marcel and his well-oiled operation could have. Since Marcel was cooperating, I tend to think he had good reason.

Klaus is happy to let Elijah be the badass because it's tangible proof that Elijah will protect the family's (i.e. Klaus') interests. That smug smile on Klaus' face after the slaughter says it all - Klaus has Elijah right where he wants him.

Yes! If Elijah is on board on these terms, he's committed. And Klaus is so happy about it.

Possibly, but I think it's in the vampires' interest to cooperate with the humans, since people are their main food source. An all-out war would lead to heavy losses on both sides, and the vamps are vastly outnumbered. I don't know that it's a matter of the humans blackmailing the vamps; I think it's just as simple as the vamps paying off the humans in power. Pirates and corrupt politicians, as Klaus calls them.

I think it's just that for once she wants to be bound by someone else's loyalty to her, rather than by her loyalty to someone else?

Totally agree with this reading, and I would very much like to see Rebekah have this sort of relationship dynamic with anyone.

IDK...I thought immortality predated them but Tessa just created the spell that gave them immortality...I don't think anything necessarily happens to the vampires if they die? I could be wrong about this, though.

That'd make sense. I'd be really interested to see if there's stakes for vampires at large with the fate of Amara or the Other Side.

She wants loyalty, she wants close ties, she wants commitment. I think it's just that for once she wants to be bound by someone else's loyalty to her, rather than by her loyalty to someone else?Exactly! Rebekah's in this really interesting place where she's secure enough in her power over the world at large that she really can be ruled by love in a way the vast majority of characters on either show can't be, and it's just enough for her to be able to see real emotional fulfillment and just not be able to get there through her relationships with her horrible brothers ( ... )
