TVD & The Originals

I think I'm just going to indefinitely revive the disclaimer that I put on my very first post about The Originals, which is that I understand these shows are Problematic (TM) and I am willing to stipulate that you win at Not Liking This Problematic Thing. Comments informing me of why I am wrong to like a show, storyline, or character will remain ( Read more... )

TESSA 5EVA. I had my first weird run-in with the fourth wall over her? I made a quick Tumblr post when I figured out why I recognized the actress from another show and she liked the post and it was like I GOT CAUGHT FANGIRLING! but I really enjoy the character so I don't care.

I guess she wants to be free in so far as she wants to be prioritised over what she considers to be trivial things, like their ~home and ~politics and Marcel's ~empire. She wants to be free from an environment where those are the overriding goals that define everyone's lives.

Yeah, I feel as if what Rebekah wants is not to feel as if she is in this position of dependence and need? And I think she's learned, to some very crude degree, that in order to get the acknowledgement that would tip the scales a little more in her favor wrt power players like Klaus (and to a lesser extent, wannabes like Elijah), she has to be able to walk away from the table - and more importantly, she needs to prove to herself that she can walk away, both for personal satisfaction and in order to have more confidence in her dealings with them. That's not quite the same thing as freedom. But I get why she frames it that way to herself.

YES! Fandom seemed to have the wrong impression of this, Imo. Elijah can be as badass as you like, but his theatrical demonstration was a pretty hollow thing, tbh. it happened because Klaus ~allowed it to happen.

Right. And I think the bond between Elijah and Klaus is as real and sincere as any in this 'verse. In its own twisted, dysfunctional, slathered-in-the-blood-of-innocents way which is entirely enabled by the fact that Klaus is basically a Terminator* and therefore never has to make any real sacrifices for the sake of the relationship, but still. Klaus let it happen and liked letting it happen, and indulging Elijah that little bit.

*As much as I'm enjoying the parallels TVD is drawing between Tessa and Damon, I would kind of argue that Klaus is more the relevant comparison. Damon is a flop so...he's a flop. Tessa is a social flop with the hard power to create alternate dimensions which can hold thousands of entities.

through that we got a few looks into what Rebekah wants and what she thinks she wants. What she wants is to feel both wanted and needed, which is pretty much the opposite of being “free,” as she claims she wants.

I think both things sort of work together...this really really resonated and then I see it's the main thing you've already discussed in comments! But I think when you've been trapped in relationships where you always feel more invested, almost like your love is cheap for the simple fact that it can be counted on, that even though the obvious #1 thing you want is to feel as wanted and needed as you want and need, the eternal disappointment and heartache make you wish you could be free, that you could just not care.

So yeah I can see it being a power play that she tells herself is a desperate attempt to break free from what will only ever be more disappointment/heartache, while she's also, of course, hoping it works.
