I haven’t updated this thing in 3 weeks, sorry! I’ve been really busy with school- papers and group projects and whatnot. Buuut this weekend I don’t have any homework because staring on Monday we’re all doing a week long fieldwork in a mental health setting. My classmate Chris and I are going to Western State Hospital in Tacoma. I’m not thrilled about the long commute (should take an hour or so to get there), but the place itself looks pretty good. Western is the psychiatric hospital for 19 counties in WA- it consists of 56 buildings on 264 acres of land, with a capacity of 776 in-patients and 107 out-patients. There are three centers at Western: the Center for Adult Services, Center for Geriatric Services, and Center for Forensic Services. I’m not sure where Chris and I will be, or what exactly we’ll be doing, but it should be interesting. Every time I tell someone about this fieldwork assignment they’re really surprised- no one knows that occupational therapists work in mental health. Actually, most people don’t even know what occupational therapy is.

Other than school, I’ve been having fun stuff when I can. John and I went canoeing two weekends in a row- once by ourselves, and once with our friends Miyuki and Bungo. Canoeing is a lot of fun- you just have to remember to cover every inch of your body with sunscreen, or you'll get burned in the weirdest places.

Last weekend was John’s 25th birthday and the Capital Hill Block Party. On Friday night we saw Les Savy Fav, who were awesome, and then Vampire Weekend, who are a bit over-hyped in my opinion. Saturday we walked to Capitol Hill, grabbed dinner, bought soy ice cream, strawberries, and walnut pieces and sat on a curb and made sundaes to celebrate John’s birthday. Then we saw The Fleet Foxes, Chromeo, and Devotchka. The Block Party was a lot of fun, but boy was it crowded!

In other news, my brother Andrew recently took a trip to Ecuador. He was there for 2.5 weeks and it sounds like he had a great time- he has some really cool stories about traveling around the country with a Nun and her Chauffeur, swimming in a waterfall, being blessed by a Hasidic Rabbi, and reaching ridiculously high altitudes. Also, he sent us some really awesome souvenirs. Here's me in a sweater made from Alpaca wool, and John playing with his fancy new chess set:

Speaking of international stuff- my Citizenship student passed her Naturalization Interview!!! Honestly, I was a little worried about the writing section of the test, but apparently it was no sweat. I spoke with her on the phone a few hours after she passed, and I just kept telling her how happy I was and she just kept telling me how happy she was- it was a funny conversation. I hope she'll want to continue tutoring, with the test out of the way we could work on some really interesting stuff.

Well, I guess that's about it really. July was a very busy, but good, month. Here's a sneak preview of the next few weeks:

August 22: Last day of the summer quarter
August 22-24: I'm taking John to Vancouver, BC to celebrate his birthday (a little late) and our first anniversary (a little early)- it's gonna be great :)
August 29-September 1: John's brother Joe is coming to visit and we're going to Bumbershoot, awww yeaaah.
September 4-10: Visiting my wonderful family in Maryland!

And finally, I will leave you with a ridiculous video that Kelly shot in class the other day. I wish I could tell you that there's a valid reason we were doing the electric slide in grad school....but I can't. Also, I find following the simplest choreography difficult enough, but when I kept stopping to watch Francis (plaid shirt, cowboy hat, bandanna around face) bust a move, it became damn near impossible.
