To all those handling their own router setup: Make sure to test the speed with and without router. The router may be a major bottleneck if misconfigured. We got about 900 kb/s, but when I looked at one of the bills (that we'd had to pay by mistake, getting it fixed now), I noticed that our nominal speed was 4 Mb/s. Because work seems to suck particularly today, we have been sucked into a hole generated by some random computer magazine article. It claims that there are now more chips (as in integrated circuits) produced worldwide than grains of rice, and at a lower unit cost. Could this be true?

I'm changing my SQL database for my photo site to have an abstraction between exhibits and pictures (sinces there's significant overlap of pictures between exhibits). For that purpose, I needed a table that map exhibit pictures numbers to internal numbers. Since they were sequentially numbered, it would have been easy to do a loop with some SQL ( Read more... )

Gotta write this down before I forget: We've been wanting to upgrade our server at home, it's an old slow (and noisy) desktop thing. Why not get a cheap XBox (not 360) and put XBox-linux on it? I see it on QXL for 500 kroner, roughly $50. It could be not just a fun test-drive, but also a really cheap way to get a prettier, quieter and faster

Verbose, maybe, but at least readable. And XSLT is supposed to make it real easy to transform XML. Except XSLT really wants you to have namespaces on everything. So either your XML becomes riddled with some random prefix like
