You're Welcome, Goddaddy Jake

Dec 07, 2008 23:51

Rating: PG-13 for language (so far)
Summary: Leah and her “harpiness” helps Jacob in his time of need, but accidently reveals a secret. Jake POV.
A/N: If Nessie was instead born a boy and Bella went through with naming him Edward Jacob (no imprinting!) This takes place right after the *shudders* birth scene and Jacob knows that Bella is in the process of becoming a vampire.

I’m pretty sure I will continue this, but I wanted to post this first part….feedback is greatly appreciated!

Disclaimer: Characters belong to Stephenie Meyer. She talks to them. You know, I feel you Steph, that’s very normal for a writer, but you ignored some of your characters with Breaking Dawn, I’m just sayin’.

“Seriously.  She named that leech demon after you?”

“I didn’t stutter. Just let me by.”

“No. I have to follow you. I insist.”

I stumbled through the doorway of the Cullen house and pushed past Leah hoping for two things: that I could get back to La Push before Bella officially became a bloodsucker, or that I could get far away, quickly as possible so Edward couldn’t hear my thoughts. And surprisingly, I was grateful of Leah’s presence in my ear, because all I could think about was punching her.

“Edward Jacob. Eddie Jake. Eddie J. EJ.” She discovered each new name like she was reciting the states and their capitals, knowing full well how much that insulted me more.

“Shut the hell up, Leah.”

She snorted, and then continued. “Uncle Jacob. Uncle Jake. No-Godfather Jake. ‘Mother, how did I get my name?’ Well, EJ, I am madly in love with your father, but I also screwed your uncle over, so I couldn’t decide between the two names.’ Haha! No! Edwacob! That’s it!”

I stopped marching through the woods and began to shake. She stopped behind me, and I could hear her sharp words brush against my ear in a quick whisper.

“Don’t even phase. You won’t be able to outrun me. Just keep walking until you get to La Push and maybe you’ll be far enough away. Come on, Jacob. Keep walking…and listening.”

So she knew she was the only thing keeping me from showing Edward my embarrassment, shame and hurt. I quickened my steps. She continued to follow me, her long strides staying just far enough behind me so it looked like she was taunting me, like always.  She began again.

“Maybe they’ll invite you over for Christmas dinner so you can give your nephew a present. Hell, you’ll be the present! A wolf skin!”

Umm, that was weak, Leah. Even for you. Try again.

“I don’t know what’s worse, having to be the maid of honor at my cousin and former lover’s wedding, or having the child of the married girl you’re in love with being named after you.”

There was something pathetic about her voice in that last insult. I could feel her stop behind me, and I turned around cautiously. She was perched on her toes and wasn’t breathing. She stared at the ground in front of my feet.

“Leah, what’s wrong?”

She glanced up at me, turned back toward the Cullen’s, then turned to look at me again.

“Damn,” she almost whined in a whisper.

Then I understood.

She ruined it. She ruined the ruse. That last insult threw off her game and now she was spilling her thoughts. Probably my thoughts too, and we weren’t that far from the Cullen’s. Damn was right.

Our speed was our only option. She began to tremble violently, and she broke into a run. Leah wasn’t as in control as I when it came to phasing, and she normally had to work her heart rate up to complete the transformation. She ran past me, I gave her a few seconds until I heard ripping clothes, and then I was right there behind her, running, escaping, together. Her thoughts were racing.

I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry, Jacob. I shouldn’t have said that. I thought I would be able to get you farther away from the leeches’ house. But now he knows.

He’s not an idiot, Leah.  I’m sure he can guess I’m a little pissed off.

No! He knows about me. About me! He has no right to know-

We all know how you feel about your “former lover” and your “woe is me” love life, genius.

No you don’t.

Then there was silence for about a minute or so. I didn’t even hear Seth, which meant he must have been in human form, looking at-

Dear, dear EJ. Jacob, I really think that girl is stupid. That’s just rude. I’m serious.

And being the maid of honor isn’t?

I can handle people being impolite, Uncle. I always got practice from my lovely “brethren”.  Thanks a lot. But you, most high Alpha, can’t. You’re getting pissed I called Bella stupid. Right now. Well, she is. I would never do that to anyone if I was in her situation. Heh. Well, I don’t think I’ll ever be in her situation either.

What do you mean?

Home sweet home. I’ve missed you so. You’re welcome, Goddaddy Jake.

And she was gone. I slowed to a trot as I saw the sight of the La Push beach break in front of me. I hadn’t been home since that day I ran away from the pack. So, the thought of reckoning with the aftermath of that pushed away her thought that had almost me stop in my tracks minutes before.

No you don’t.
