There's something to be said for male characters who, if not actually bad, are morally ambiguous, or rebels, or dangerous yet somehow good. I watched the Korean film Duelist (they say the original title actually translates The Detective). What a strange, strange movie. There wasn't a whole lot of story there, mostly surreal scenes and lighting, Kang Dong-Won being pretty and Ha Ji-Won being out there. I laughed when she was trying to be an undercover gisaeng.

As far as I can remember, my first encounters with Korean entertainment were the move The Host (2006), the drama Someday (2006) and the movie Take Care of My Cat (2001) -- any one of which could have introduced me to Bae Doo-na. Though I'm spending a lot of time studying Chinese, I've also been looking into Korean just a bit... just so I can maybe tell when people are being rude to one another. I'm very fond of ancient settings, visually. Costumes, horses, everything. So much pretty. (For some reason my mind is flashing back to the scene in House of Flying Daggers when Takeshi Kaneshiro is picking flowers while horseback riding... which is just fantastic.) Seeing the damo in Return of Iljimae makes me want to watch Damo again. Except then my heart would be shredded into 23 pieces, stepped on repeatedly, and left to wither in the cold cold sun. Because that's what Damo does while smiling at me and singing.

And okay, I'll probably watch Damo again soon because who doesn't like angsty pain? But maybe not ( Read more... )
