Art is just rude. Breaking into someone’s house and eating their cookies and drinking their milk? Rude.

I liked Joker: Folie à Deux (not loved, I'd say 6/7 outta 10) and while I do understand why lots of people wouldn't like it, I agree with Dan Murrell here who says he thinks a lot of this is a "blood in the water" type situation wherein actual criticism of the film is swept aside in favor of click-bait aggressive negativity.

I like his review which I think is pretty balanced in terms of acknowledging the film's issues.

Also it's been a week and I can't get Leigh Gill's scene in the courtroom out of my head. I do wish the film had actually [Spoiler (click to open)]leaned more into that. It seemed like they were wanting to show more of how Arthur can't keep up the persona by forcing him to confront the reality of what he did here, but then they just did the bizarre... 'He presumably gets assaulted in prison and that's what actually shakes him out of it' thing.

I literally just rewatched Gary's testimony scene (showed up too early for my screening of The Apprentice and just snuck into the IMAX theater for a few minutes lol) and a) might be the best scene in the movie?? His performance is just so genuine and heartbreaking and b) yes, I think the movie wants us to think that [Spoiler (click to open)]it's Gary and his friend who gets murdered in prison that make him have a change of heart...except he's also presumably prison-raped there. So once again it's about him being victimized, not about recognizing what he did wrong. And I also feel like the entire movie dodges saying anything meaningful about the legal system/prison reform bc hey, it's Gotham and it's a fake place! Who knows what goes on there?! It's all so maddening.

I've never watched those Terrifier movies cause fuck clowns but it's pretty amazing to me it made that much at the box office. I haven't seen a single ad for it.

As for Joker: Folie à Deux, I really thought it would be bad in a campy fun way but with everyone saying it's just plain horrible I will not be spending money to see it in theatres. I still haven't even seen the Beetlejuice sequel.

The time of year also works in its favor (it's Fall, people want to watch scary things to get pumped for Halloween, etc.).

Absolutely bonkers weekend at the box office. Cannot believe that an unrated indie horror movie won the weekend, much less that it won the weekend over the second weekend of a sequel whose original film made a billion fucking dollars!! Warner Bros must be in fucking shambles right now.

On the plus side, this should mean that they go all in on promoting Dune 2 for awards season.

Bummed that Saturday Night isn't doing better, but it feels like the audience for theatrical adult dramas has become inconsistent at best. It's a shame - it wasn't amazing, but I enjoyed it!

Last night, I saw We Live in Time with an Andrew Garfield Q&A after.

The movie was exactly what I expected from the trailer, in a good way, and I still got emotionally bodied by it. I was like

Yesss they need to bring all awards effort into Dune 2. The early release date may hurt it.
