My niece is so into Harry Potter right now and my sister and I are going nuts only buying used stuff just so no more money goes to JK. it’s so hard because we want to encourage an 11 year old to read but also like damn why was it this series that you got obsessed with.

Just let your niece enjoy the magical world of Harry Potter.

I think a lot of ONTDers enjoyed Harry Potter and regardless of JKR there's no denying the joy that the book series and films brought to people.

I never got into reading the books but I did see all the films and enjoyed the countless marathons on ABC Family 😆

Sadly my obsession was Twilight but that ended quickly

Oh she doesn’t know anything about it, it’s almost just become a game of finding used versions of what she wants.

HP related: has anyone read all the young dudes? would you recommend to someone who doesn't like fanfic?

i've been seeing it mentioned everywhere lately and then last week a super clean cut/mormon-y looking student at my work was gushing about it, so i must admit i am kinda intrigued ...

I started reading it but I stopped after a few chapters bc I didn’t really like the characterization. I might try and power through a few more chapters though bc it does get hyped up a lot

I started reading it but I just fundamentally disagree with that characterization and backstory for remus.

i really don't like it, but if you do want book length, well written marauders-era fanfic then i got recs. most of them aren't finished but are regularly updated.

These picture has me getting a little emotional. I’ll watch the special, hopefully it’ll rekindle some of my lost enthusiasm for something I used to love so much.

I also just saw a teaser trailer for the next “Fantastic Beasts,” the first minute and a half really seemed like they were trying to get everyone back on board, trying to reach those people like me who’ve become disenchanted by JKR. Apparently the full trailer drops Monday. I’ll watch the trailer, but I’m not going to the cinema to see the movie and give her more money.

Buy a ticket to a different movie and sneak in?

I didn't even know they had filmed it.

Me either lol, I feel like they JUST announced Mads as Grindelwald. But that was probably months or even a year ago if they are already releasing a trailer. My perception of time is warped.
Ok found the post and it was over a year ago, oop @ me and my brain/memory:

it’s still celebrating her work which leaves a bad taste in my mouth. i loved the books but after the first movie kind of lost interest in them.

I'm surprised how strong the film universe seems to be over the books.

I have a friend who has never seen the films or read the books. I am really tempted to have them watch the films, gain their opinion, then read the books and come back to me what was better.

They are quite aware how shit JK Rowling is so that is part of the reason they never dabbled, but they are curious.

Have any of you approached the series that way - through movies first? What did you like more?

Books first. I didn't like the movies that much, the changes always annoyed me.

i remember trying to read the sorcerer's stone in 1st/2nd? grade and my undiagnosed adhd self was really struggling to concentrate. some time went by and i got into the movies as they came out. by high school the final book was already out and the last movie was about to drop and i realized i really wanted to know the full story before i finished a series that had such a huge impact on me and my entire generation - so i started reading the 7th and final book. i never really read (recreationally) before that. then when i finished it, i started reading the 6th book, and then 5th, and then I accidentally spent the summer reading the harry potter series completely backwards ( ... )

I’m not entirely surprised. More people are likely to watch a movie for two hours than commit to reading a book for longer than that ( ... )
