Started my day off helping a friend move, mostly by providing a rented moving van and some help organizing things. While we did end up moving most of her stuff, it was mostly confused and unplanned. The downside was that I spent a lot of time standing on pavement, which did not help my feet any.
Once that had been dealt with, I stopped by the post office to pick up my latest box from Amazon (because if there's one thing I need more of, it's books, right?).
I then proceeded to spend the afternoon and evening soaking my feet in hot & cold water, and reading One Bullet Away, by Nathaniel Fick. Fick was the commanding LT (Hitman Actual) of 2nd Platoon, Bravo Company, First Reconnaissance Battalion, US Marine Corps... who's actions form the core of the story in GENERATION KILL.
Devoured in a straight shot, I have to say that it is a very well presented memoir of one man's experience. He presents very clearly the dilemma of command, and in the last chapters, proves himself to be the man of honor I think he wanted to be. It's also very interesting to read on-the-ground accounts of the action in a war that is now edging up on being 8 or 9 years old.
Up next, from this same box, is Generation Kill (the book) and Jarhead (a memoir from the earlier Gulf War).
Tomorrow, Graham and I resume BURMA, with the men's gold medal hockey game as background noise.
