Yes, I know neither of those are real words. No, I don't care.
Posted this article on facebook a few weeks back but forgot to post it here:
Group seeks halt to 'don't ask, don't tell'
A gay rights organization that won a federal court ruling declaring the military's ban on openly gay troops unconstitutional wants the judge to immediately stop the policy from being used to discharge military personnel.
Lawyers for the Log Cabin Republicans say their proposal filed Thursday in the Riverside, Calif., court asks Judge Virginia A. Phillips to impose a worldwide injunction on the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
She ruled last week that the policy violates the due-process and free-speech rights of gays and lesbians.
Phillips asked the group for input on drafting an injunction.
The government has a week to respond. Department of Justice attorneys said they would object to an injunction and the issue should be decided by Congress.
I'm pretty sure the Judge who filed this injunction doesn't have the authority to do so, but at least someone is trying and making real moves. It's a bit delayed to post this now, since ending 'don't ask, don't tell' included on a war bill that will supposedly be voted on soon, but it's still a nicely positive article.
On a different note, I've been in NY for about 3 weeks now; school has been in for 2. The first week was...intense. I was truly ready to leave right then and beg Howard to let me return for this semester. It was just completely different and a bit overwhelming, perhaps even a culture shock, although I don't know for sure since I've never before experienced it. But it was serious, I even complained to family and friends which I rarely do when I'm depressingly upset about something. (It's too similar to asking for sympathy for my tastes.)
However, since then I've been able to become a bit more involved around campus by joining clubs and stuff. I'm still a bit disoriented as far as classes and the city itself are concerned, but at least I've met some people now. So seems like a list of clubs I signed up for is in order!
Science Fiction Club - which seems far too nerdy interesting for my own good
Anime Club - obviously
Sign Language Club
International Socialist Organization - doing some research into it, ya know
Club Volleyball - of which I've made the travel team!
Black Student Organization - doubt I'll be really involved, but I want to get emails in case I do want to participate
Also, classes:
Judo (MW)
Archery (MW)
Cultural Psychology (MW)
Human Learning and Memory (TR)
Psychology of Personality (TR)
Supernatrual-Japanese Fiction (W)
Which rounds out to 14 hours. Relatively smaller amount than I'm used to, but, as my friends told me, I have to have some time to actually explore and enjoy it since I'm only here for the semester so I shouldn't overwork myself.
And, on the topic of nerdiness,
New York Comic-Con/
Anime Festival is coming up soon! The weekend of October 8-10, to be exact. And yes, I will be buying my ticket soon. And cosplaying! :DDD I actually had a bus ticket to DC for that weekend, but when I found out about it my ticket was immediately cancelled. This'll be my second time going to NYCC but only my first time going for the entire weekend!
