eBay AND gmail hack? Come on!

"Enemy of mine
I'll fuck you like the devil." - 30 Seconds to Mars

It just so happens this song got stuck in my head yesterday, and that it managed to be on par with how I was feeling. Because yesterday, I found out my damn eBay account got hacked. And that this very same hacker also got into my google mail in order to keep his/her movements on my eBay a secret.

Let's back up.

This guy from eBay somehow manages to find me on facebook and sends me a message saying someone used my account to request a computer from them and that they had since found out it was a fraud (after he had mailed the computer). So I go to my account, looking for anything that's wrong. I didn't immediately notice anything because my account page did not have any activity on it that was different than what I had last used it for. But then, I go to my messages and see conversations back and forth between my account and many users, dating from September 1st through September 7th. Most times the person was trying to get a 17" MacBook Pro. A couple of times, though, he/she triedto get a Canon camera. (And they actually bid on and won a camera from a guy, but he luckily did not mail it.)

Anyway, I start going through the whole process of changing my password and reporting the hack to eBay and to the users the person had gotten in contact with to make sure nothing else had been mailed to him or her. As I'm messaging these users, I'm also sure the send a copy of the message to my email which is open in another tab. But I notice that none of the emails are arriving in my inbox. So, on a whim, I check my trash and, lo and behold, there are all the messages that I had just sent and that this 3rd party sent from my eBay since Sept. 1st.

This didn't bother me much because I had already thought the person could have hacked my email also because my passwords were the same. So I just assumed they had stopped eBay from sending emails to me and had put their email in instead, but this wasn't the case when I checked my eBay email. So, I don't know, I just kind of brushed it off and changed my gmail password. Then, I go to create this filter to make sure all eBay messages would go into my inbox. As I'm doing this, google asks me if I would also like these messages to be forwarded to this other email THAT WAS NOT MINE as it had been doing.

Now I'm confused/angry/upset. I go to my settings and see that someone had created a filter that caused any email with the words eBay and/or PayPal would go directly to my trashcan and be sent to their email. Pissed off did not describe how I felt by this intrusion. Like, you hacked my password, fine, whatever. I can change those. But to actually imbed yourself in my gmail account? That pissed me off to a major extent. Keep in mind, I had already checked my PayPal and found out that someone had tried to hack it as well but apparently failed because my password was different.

All this combined to make me decide to report them to whatever authorities I could. If they had just hacked my eBay and not left their mark in my email (or touched my money, which they failed to do), I probably wouldn't have decided to do this. But since they did, I did. I've called one level of law enforcement and filled out a form online. I've reported 2 of 3 items that will hopefully help in catching the person, but I'm not getting my hopes up too high. If someone's a hacker, they know what to do and what not to do so they won't get caught, for the most part. But the fact that the person left a bit of an obvious trail does make me hope. Unfortunately for the guy who mailed the laptop, retrieving that is barely in the realm of realism.

So yeah, that's what happened. I'm kind of excited now to see where it all goes. It's the thrill of the chase now, you know. I'm sure I'd be less excited about the prospect of  actually catching this guy if he'd gotten some money off me. I'd probably be more interested in getting my money back. But since he didn't, I am able to look forward to the chase and what may come of it. Because it would make me insanely happy if this guy actually got caught.
