Directions: Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.
However, if I know you only as someone who friended me and then comments every so often, I may only give you one or two.
Five words
sketchington associated with me:
- Home gardening
When I was a kid we moved into a house on Biltmore drive. It had a big yard with a garden on the side, and I remember how awesome I thought it was to be able to pick tomatoes and cucumbers and lettuce and eat them right there. Now I have a condo with no land I can use for a garden, but I have several large pots on my porch with soil in which I have grown tomatoes, zucchini, and string beans. In fact, when I first bought my condo my real estate agent gave me as housewarming gifts some young "Better Boy" tomato plants.
- Clever Sushi
I don't know how clever my sushi is; I don't do anything all that fantastic with it. But I do like to make my own sushi, frequently futomaki with egg, cucumber, crab sticks, and shiitake. I've also made hot dog sushi.
- Reboot
ReBoot was the first all-CGI TV show. I first saw it when it was on on Saturday mornings, but I was rarely conscious enough to gather more than vague impressions. But when I got on the net I met Lar DeSouza, a fan of the show and friend of one of the animators. He sent me some dubs of the Canadian version of the show, and it was pretty good. At least, that's what I thought until I saw the episode "Painted Windows," which made my jaw drop open. Then, when I went to visit him a few years later, he sat me and some friends down on the couch and made us watch the entire third season in several days. After that, man, we were hooked, and Wendy (one of said friends) and I soon created the website Slack & Hash's Domain.
- Frank N Furter
Frank is a fun character to play! However, he's not a character I'm not actually interested in. I've never gotten into his mind much, he never inspired loads of fan art or fic the way other characters do. To be honest, I think he's a huge jerk. But it's fun to be that jerk for an hour and a half at a time.
- Reboot again
What? You think I have more to say about ReBoot? Lazy bum.
And here are five words
lemonwitch associated with me:
- DDR
When my RHPS cast, Lambda Psi Phi, moved to what was then Peachtree Cinemas & Games, I would watch people play this weird game that involved dancing around on a stage to music. It looked like fun, but I was afraid to try it in public for fear I'd look like a spaz in front of everyone. So I found a bundle on eBay - DDR Konamix & two dance pads - fer cheap, and tried it at home. Hoo boy, was I awful. I remember failing a 3-footer. I wasted money on some other soft pads and cheap, crappy metal pads before I found RedOctane Ignitions, and those are what made DDR really fun for me. The were accurate! I could sense where I was! They lasted for a long time! And I improved, and could do harder and harder songs... and without meaning to I lost about 18 pounds, to the point that a coworker very carefully asked me if I was restricting or purging. Erk. That led to a change in dirtary habits. About 4 years later I dance an hour every single day I'm home and not horribly sick, I can now dance the easier 10-footers, and I have some muscle definition and my doctor says I'm really really healthy. I honestly think I'm in the best condition now that I ever have been because of the regular exercise, and I plan to continue it as long as DDR at home exists for the health benefits. And also 'cause it's fun.
However, I suck out loud in the arcade.
- Reboot
What, again? OK, fine. About two years ago I got an E-mail from someone with Rainmaker Entertainment asking me if I would be willing to help with a ReBoot Revival. My first thought: is this a crank? Nope, it was for real, and Rainmaker was contacting the Big Dawg fans with live websites to help promote their revival! I was thrilled at first, but I also had misgivings because it was kind of a cockamamie way to revive a property. But wouldn't it be great if it worked? And it did look possible. So I was on board, and I pushed it as hard as anyone, including giving loads of input on everything, posting info on my site, drawing others in, and even doing a podcast about it. I've documented most of the revival elsewhere on my blog, so I'll just say, long story short, it looks like it's ground to a halt because Rainmaker has pulled the plug. They keep promising "great things" to come "very soon"... which we've come to read as "don't hold your breath." Still, I don't regret any of my efforts, and I think it was good for the fan community to at least try!
- Rocky Horror
I was a fan of RHPS before I really knew what it was. That seems weird, but it's the truth. A movie about sex and aliens and horror and it's got The Time Warp somewhere in it and people dress up and act it out? Sounds like bad movies crossed with musicals crossed with Halloween, and I was all for it! My first showings were at the AMC Northlake Festival 8 with a cast called Sidewalk Sinema. I was interested in joining; they weren't interested in having me. But in college I got up in my cheap wig and homemade Frank outfit in the Georgia Theater and people cheered like mad... I was hooked. And when I went back to Northlake Fest 8 after college Sidewalk Sinema had just left - so I formed a cast with J.L. and Rod, and performed there for years. And several years after that, Laurie - a former Northlake regular - lured me out of retirement with promises of fame and cookies. Mmm, cookies.
- Stoicism
Hmm... I don't know a lot about stoicism except that it involves accepting whatever comes your way if you can't do anything about. Which I can do sometimes. But when my stress level is up I feel like jumping around and screaming.
- Zen
I can honestly say I don't know what Zen is, but I have read Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I bought it at a college book sale, its margins full of notes from the assistant professor I got it from, because it was one of those legendary books and, hey, it was worth $1.00 to check it out. It turns out it's about a man on a motorcycle journey with one of his sons, and his investigation into just what "Quality" is, and his past as a college professor. Motorcycle maintenance is used mostly to illustrate philosophical points. Yes, I am serious, and I would recommend this book.
Oh, and here are some more from
gunguru16:
- DDR
Have I mentioned that I bought a used Xbox so I could play the Ultramixes? And then I found that for numerous reasons they sucked, and have not played every song in a single UM.
- Cooking, more specifically baking.
Remember how I mentioned that at one point I dropped too much weight too fast due to DDR? One change I made was to start packing bento lunches. Before that I'd been eating an apple, two rice cakes, and a Coke as lunch. Every day. No lie. I decided to try packing more solid lunches, particularly since I was always ravenous in the afternoons anyway. That led to me trying Japanese recipes.. and I gradually started getting interested in cooking in general, and blogging about my experiences. Keep in mind that beforehand my notion of cooking was spaghetti & ragu! Baking was a great leap of faith for me, and I did stumble hilariously on my first try, but after I got a bread maker I was hooked. Now I never buy bread. I even cook my own hot dog buns. (I only use the dough cycle, and shape and bake it the rest of the way myself. Who needs bucket-shaped loaves of bread?)
- Asian stuff
Um... what can I say, Japanese and, to a lesser extent, Chinese interest me. They're very different cultures, and their languages use a mindset very alien to those of us who grew up with Latin-based languages. I find that fascinating, which is why I've studied Japanese off and on for about 15 years.
- Cats
I've always been a cat person. I love cats. I can't have one because my home is not pet friendly and it would be cruel to keep an animal that I couldn't pay enough attention to. But I've done artwork, including a set of designs for a "wishful thinking" animated version of the musical. In my senior year of college I even had a short piece of Cats fan fiction published in my school's literary magazine.
- Individualism.
Well... I've never been a conformist. Never wanted to be what someone else thought of as cool. I always wanted people to like and respect me, but for what I am and what I'm good at. Is this moral strength and all? Nah, it's just my default mode. Don't wanna pretend I'm something I'm not because it's not worth it to me. And anyone who doesn't like me on my own grounds is not someone I need as a friend. So there!
