Don't spend too much time in your shower - it might make you sick

The Center for Health, Environment & Justice, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing environmental health harms caused by chemical threats, recently released a report stating that shower curtains made with PVC contain numerous harmful chemicals including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phthalates (think CA toys), and organotins. Cloth shower curtains? So how does it work? I'm assuming you don't use a liner with it, so do you find that water drips down onto the bathroom floor?

we just have a single layer and it works fine for keeping water in the shower. No liner needed. Just make sure the bottom of it is inside the tub when you shower

doesn't it get mildew-y from being wet in the shower and then taking so long to dry?

I've got a cloth curtain, and it really doesn't take that much time to dry at all. Just don't leave it all bunched up when you get out! Also you can always take it down and stick it in the washing machine.

yup. thats another great thing about cloth curtains. they are easier on your wallet because you can just wash them.

I use a cloth liner just because I prefer the way it looks. Yay for accidental aesthetic healthiness!

But i do try to wash my cloth curtain liner every few weeks. If I don't, it gets all orange and nasty at the bottom and then I have to buy a new one, because I don't know what that orange is exactly, but it won't wash out once it sets into the cloth, and that creeps me out in big, bad ways.

We have a decorative shower curtain on top with a cloth (I think it's rip stop nylon) liner that we pull into the tub when we shower.

The orange staining in our shower got worse shortly before the hot water heater rusted out. I'm pretty sure the low-level orange buildup in my shower is just rust from the old-ish pipes.

I don't think it has anything to do with rust, because our house is brand new, and we get that orange stuff in the toilet bowls.

Hard water of some kind then, maybe - just mineral deposits/residue. It's not unheard of. I don't know anything offhand to clear the stains once they're set, unfortunately :(

It dries really fast, and every so often, we take it down and throw it in the laundry anyway

I bought my cloth shower liner at Target, but you could even make one. I periodically (q 2-3 months) wash it. I like it because it doesn't have that smell the plastic ones do and it looks fancier.

i use only a very thin cotton curtain and while it does get very wet water does not get out onto the floor
