One of the books I took with me in the summer when my Catholic school was letting out was this awfully weathered book on dinosaurs. I remember being fascinated because the pictures and text at the beginning of the book described how the first fish walked on land. I was in total awe. For a long time I wanted to go on digs and make some incredible discovery, but then after further study I learned that most digs produce almost nothing of value. Then I saw that I would become a very impatient and eventually depressed archaelogist. But I still read articles on others' discoveries with great verve. - conversation:
I could never take a vow of silence. I've become better at listening over the years, but I have a major case of verbal diarrhea. I love learning about people and am insatiably curious about my fellow humans. Those who can hold up their end of a conversation on a multitude of topics ...I can't say enough good about them. It's really how I get close to people. When the talking stops, the relationship soon follows. At least with me. - earthships:
How awesome: building your own house with recycled materials, and living (at least partially) off the grid, having your own indoor greenhouse and designing whatever you want on the inside (within the limits of your inspiration, budget, and the laws of nature). The only problems? Most of these houses are in NM, and in a sort of remote area. Not sure I could be so far from "civilization" on an everyday basis :/ - georgia o'keefe:
Simple, but intriguing art, at least to me. The size and the color of the compositions speaks for itself. My favorite may be this orange poppy: http://www.wroxton.oxon.sch.uk/images/poppies.jpg
- john donne:
Who wouldn't like a poet who writes about metaphysics and sex and makes one's brain hurt in trying to comprehend him? Well, I'll let him do the talking: http://www.luminarium.org/sevenlit/donne/sonnet14.htm and http://www.luminarium.org/sevenlit/donne/triplefool.htm
- museums:
Warning: I can spend HOURS in museums. I will stand and read every little placard and examine everything thoroughly. Most people will have come and gone through the whole museum before I've finished looking at one of the larger rooms. I guess this is the remnant of my early desire to learn anything I came into contact with. Wonder where that went...
My favorites are art museums, and natural history, however, I can probably get interested in almost anything. The Mutter museum appealed to my dark side... http://www.collphyphil.org/muttpg1.shtml - poetry:
If I write at all lately (other than lj entries) it is to write poetry...I love the way I will hear a string of words in my head and then the rest will just build off that and flow. If I write, it is sporadic and generally does not require (in my opinion) much further editing. I suppose it's like a brainfart, but hopefully would cause a better response than its physiological namesake.
When it comes to poems, I'm not a fan of obscure allusions...I am a fan of multiple meanings, metaphor, imagery and interesting use of sound (rhyme, alliteration, assonance/consonance, etc.)

One of my college comp. classes once spent an hour on an impromptu discussion of this poem. I found it very interesting to see people really getting interested, so I let it continue and let them argue with each other, forming competing theories on the spot. - slacking off:
This is one of my major vices...I often think of what I *could* be doing, if only I could find the motivation. Given this, I find it hard to condemn anyone else's slacking.
On the other hand, I would never want to be an uptight, superambitious prick. Those people just wear me down. - traveling:
Even if it's not a place that is supposed to interest me, I love traveling around. Whether it's exploring a street in my town I've never been to or a far flung country, I enjoy just seeing the differences, and discovering what is there. When traveling, I try very hard not to be the obnoxious tourist. Actually, I don't try...it doesn't come naturally to me, luckily. I think I am very adaptable...capable of melding with different environments so that people don't realize I haven't been there all the time. - yoga:
It's hard for me to get around to it, but when I do get into it again on a regular basis, I'm always glad I did. I've tried tao yoga and meditation, hatha yoga and ashtanga yoga so far. I love laying in the corpse pose. I've never come close to falling asleep in class, but I have felt myself at times in almost a trancelike state. I feel it is a path to reconciling the different "voices" in my head; grounding myself in the realization that I am just a tiny speck in time and the universe, but it's really ok.
