So, my first experience with tentant-ship is over. Let the second commence. I still can't believe what an utter motherfucker my old landlord is. He's the smallest man I've ever met, in every negative sense. I actually cried my first tears of rage during the inspection. Two weeks before, he informed my dad and I that a cracked window was due to settling. He went back on his word, denied that he had ever said that, and sneered that "windows don't crack from settling," and that he had been referring to cracks in the walls next to the window. That, and the way he worded the lease agreement so as to cover his ass in any direction -he's a lawyer- forced me into the bathroom for tissues. He's even refusing to deduct the carpet-cleaning costs from the security deposit and claiming that "normal wear and tear" consists of the house settling and the outside windows getting rain spots, not of scuff-marks on the kickboards in the kitchen (which is abnormal wear and tear). Sorry, Jim, I didn't know that we weren't supposed to live in the house.
He and his wife are both ridiculously ugly pug-dog types. Their new baby will never have a chance.
The house on Brooklyn Ave was a very, very expensive learning experience. Matt still owes me $170, and I have yet to approach Amy to pay her part of the bills. I'm in the hole over $400 just because of people not thinking they need to pay bills, and cornering people about paying me back means I either miss work, classes, or my ever-disappearing free time. In most ways the entire past year has been a mistake, but some very good things have come out of it. Namely, Amber and Evan, and countless stories and memories (most of which are clouded by a drunken haze). In that house I had two pretty horrible academic quarters (for me), one decent summer, and somehow I almost made Dean's List last quarter... if it hadn't been for my 3.2 in German. GERMAN, of all classes, kept me off of the list. At least I have the dry, rotten wood of indignity to fuel my fire to learn this quarter. And to avenge myself upon the German department. Per usual, don't expect to hear much from me this quarter. But know that I probably think about you a fair amount. If I get a landline installed here eventually, that could easily change. But as of now, I get worse cell-phone reception here than I did at Brooklyn Ave. The phone doesn't even ring, I just get beeps for voicemails left.
Regardless of the communication dificulties, Greenlake feels like a healthier environment for me already. Even two blocks over from Aurora I have not once been panhandled, nor dodged bodily fluids on the sidewalk. And I've heard sirens once in over a week. Just once. And it was on a weekend.

Actually, I'm almost done with my homework as of 9:00, after having had work and class for over 10 hours today. Maybe you will hear from me more often this quarter.
