and came out with my soul untouched

Jun 30, 2010 10:22

Ugh, are we sure it's not Tuesday again?

Since I don't have a vanity in my bathroom, I have this two-tier wire rack that holds my lotions and notions etc. It sits on the toilet tank. This morning, I knocked it over and not only did my stuff go sprawling everywhere, but the rack itself came apart, and I had to put it back together. I think I did it backwards. Sigh. Then, as I was washing my hands after making my lunch, I knocked over the soap and the dishsoap that sit on the edge of the kitchen sink, right into the tiny space between the sink and the fridge. Oy. I'm just glad I didn't knock over anything breakable or irreplaceable. And that I made it to work in one piece. The day's still young though. Anything could happen. Sigh.

On the upside, at least today I remembered to actually bring my breakfast and lunch to work, instead of leaving them on the counter after I made them, like I did yesterday. Clearly this week and I are not getting along very well. It's already rolled me for my lunch money, and that was only Tuesday. Eep.

Time for the monthly roundups! I'm not sure how that happened, but apparently time is having its way with me. Sadly, I don't think I'm enjoying it nearly as much as I could be. Anyway!

June 2010 Writing Roundup

can't erase that secret smile
Supernatural; girl!Sam/Dean; adult; 2,180 words
It's no panties Thursday.

you'll be someone you wouldn't understand
Supernatural; Dean; spoilers through 5.22; pg; warnings: suicidal ideation, 2nd person POV; 2,238 words
This is your life now.

Not a particularly productive month. I can't even say I was working on longer stories, because I, uh, wasn't. *facepalm* I didn't read a lot of fic, either. Mostly I watched Fringe and whined about not writing anything.

Top 5 songs - June 2010

The '59 Sound - The Gaslight Anthem
Did you hear the '59 sound coming through on Grandmama's radio?
Did you hear the rattling chains in the hospital walls?
Did you hear the old gospel choir when they came to carry you over?
Did you hear your favorite song one last time?

This song makes me all teary. Stupid song.

Great Expectations - The Gaslight Anthem
I saw tail lights last night in a dream about my first wife.
Everybody leaves and I'd expect as much from you.
I saw tail lights last night in a dream about my old life.
Everybody leaves, so why, why wouldn't you?

This song makes me think of Dean and his abandonment issues.

Antebellum - Vienna Teng
I know the border lines we drew between us
keep the weapons down,
keep the wounded safe;
I know our antebellum innocence
was never meant to see the light of our armistice day.

And this makes me think of a season 5 girl!Sam/Dean story I am writing

Watershed - Vienna Teng
oh, I've done this many times before you
ashen sky
lightning storms
deltas to desert plains
wartime on every border

This needs to be an apocalyptic Fringe vid, I'm telling you. It raises the hair on my neck every damn time I hear it, and I've listened to it a lot. A lot.

Grandmother Song - Vienna Teng
but the one thing they can't take away from you
is your mind and the education you've been through
so you find a man who understands that too
make sure that he stays true
gives respect where its due
make sure he knows what he's got in you

I just like this a lot. It reminds me of things my grandmother used to say to me, and also it has hand-clapping.

30 Days of TV meme

Day 01 - A show that should have never been canceled
Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching
Day 03 - Your favorite new show (aired this TV season)
Day 04 - Your favorite show ever
Day 05 - A show you hate
Day 06 - Favorite episode of your favorite TV show
Day 07 - Least favorite episode of your favorite TV show
Day 08 - A show everyone should watch
Day 09 - Best scene ever
Day 10 - A show you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving
Day 11 - A show that disappointed you
Day 12 - An episode you've watched more than 5 times

Since I completely spaced on this yesterday, I'll do two today:

Day 13 - Favorite childhood show
Magic Garden! The storybox! The chuckle patch! Carol & Paula!

Day 14 - Favorite male character
Let's see. There's Josh Lyman and Toby Ziegler. Leo McGarry. Dan Rydell. Xander Harris. Rupert Giles. Luke Danes. Alec McDowell. Alec Hardison. Matt Saracen. Tim Riggins (!). Eric Taylor. Keith Mars. Hawkeye Pierce. Frank Pembleton. Meldrick Lewis. Mike Kellerman. Karl "Helo" Agathon. Sam Winchester.

But you all know this comes down to two characters, and you can't make me choose between them:

Mal Reynolds and Dean Winchester.

*hands*

I might give the edge to Mal, given that Dean did annoy me some in season 5, and not in regular character ways, but in ways that made me want to shake the writers. (Speaking of manpain, here is an excellent post on why manpain is so infuriating; thanks to
kanata for the link) Otoh, he did kind of pull it together in the end, though I'm still very worried that s6 will be swamped with his manpain in ways that I won't find enjoyable at all.

Mal didn't have time to overwhelm us with his manpain, and also, even when he was broody, he got shit done, and I like a man who gets shit done. I'm thinking here of him kicking Niska's man into the engine, and shooting the Fed in the pilot, and well, the whole last half of the movie. I think that's the difference between Mal, and say, Angel - Mal has manpain, but he doesn't have time to sit in his office and brood over his sins, because he has a crew to feed and a ship to fuel.

I miss writing Mal. He definitely had a certain style of speaking that I enjoyed writing.

While everything on SPN is about the Winchesters' manpain, in the earlier seasons, Dean channeled it into saving people! hunting things! the family business! With the apocalypse arc, it was meant to widen out the story, but it just narrowed the whole story down to Winchesters & associates, and the people they saved became faceless, aggregate, instead of individuals, and that's a less interesting story to me, week in and week out.

Still, though, in the end I can't really choose between them, so I have to say Mal Reynolds and Dean Winchester.

Day 15 - Favorite female character
Day 16 - Your guilty pleasure show
Day 17 - Favorite mini series
Day 18 - Favorite title sequence
Day 19 - Best TV show cast
Day 20 - Favorite kiss
Day 21 - Favorite ship
Day 22 - Favorite series finale
Day 23 - Most annoying character
Day 24 - Best quote
Day 25 - A show you plan on watching (old or new)
Day 26 - OMG WTF? Season finale
Day 27 - Best pilot episode
Day 28 - First TV show obsession
Day 29 - Current TV show obsession
Day 30 - Saddest character death
