So... House of Flying Daggers. In short, one of the most painful cinematic experiences I've had to sit through. I'm not sure how it compares to Punch Drunk Love in terms of sheer incomprehensible awfulness... It's probably worse. My forehead will probably be permenantly creased, such was the expression of disbelief I held throughout most of the two hour running time.

Okay, first the good. Zyang Ziyi... always gorgeous; could knock me over with a feather after she smiles. Scenery was very purdy - they love their colour do the Chinese. Now the bad. Wooded acting; if it's in Chinese and I can still tell it's wooden, it must be bad. Characterisation: she was a straight-out Mary-Sue and the guys were all over the place. Translation: Godawful. The script simply cannot have been that bad to start with. Plot: Nonsense. Meaningless twists only worsened the wooden acting and bad script. Camerawork: Dodgy. Action scenes: some good, most ordinary and nonsense. Sex: Appauling. Limits of Zyang's range and cinematographer's skill become painfully obvious. Zero chemistry between leads.

This from the man who directed Hero? I'm giving it half a star, Margaret.
