Somehow, I made it out of the store with a bottle of Brooklyn Brewery's Black Chocolate Stout after having only paid $1.70. I will be attempting to repeat this feat on a larger scale in about a week, I think. Hopefully my first impression will not diminish much during the next couple drinks. I kind of like Great Divide's Hibernation Ale. It's a reddish light brown. Subdued, earthy, a little grainy, a little malty. Hops can be detected without too much trouble if you look for them, but it's generally mild. At 3 dollars, the Great Lakes Blackout Stout is so very much worth the price of admission. The price kept me from trying it for a while, but I finally got around to it. And the good news is that at 9% ABV, you can get the same amount of coziness per dollar as you would with your average 2-dollar ( Read more... )

It tastes like Post Grape Nuts cereal.

I've had the Porter from the Bell's brewery two or three times now, and all I can ever remember about it is that it's very roasty and that I'd most certainly have another any time. Oh, man. After going to the store just once, I can already tell that I'm going to like the Fall brews much better than the Summer ones. The Oberon wasn't bad*, but it's mostly just an overrated locally trendy Blue Moon substitute. I don't really like citrus, anyway, so I won't miss it.
