Music playschool memories

Dec 16, 2008 02:47

We had the last of our Christmas carol concerts today with the orchestra. This one wasn't as tedious as the ones on Sunday. My old music playschool teacher was there to listen and came to talk to me afterwards. She recognized me based on my name as her daughter started at our orchestra this Fall. I went to music playschool before I started to play the violin, so it was before I turned six. That's like 20 years ago. o.O It's amazing that she still remembered me. I remember that I liked her, she was a good teacher.

I tried to search for a wiki article on music playschools, but I guess that it's a Finnish phenomenon as in other countries it's organized more as music kindergardens. Music playschools are like hobbies for little kids and they're very popular in Finland. I can't remember how old I was when I started, but probably around 3-4 years old. We sang, danced, played games and played instruments there. I also learned to play the 5-stringed kantele there. It was the first instrument that I learned to play. My music playschool was connected to a music institute, like many others, so I started to study play the violin at the music institute when I was six years old. (I changed to viola when I was around 13-14 years old.)

When I was looking for the wiki article I came across something else, which I recognized: Curwen Solfege Hand Signs. Our music theory teachers used those at the institute. I recall being able to sing based on the hand sings that the teacher used. The Joulukalenteri, 15. luukku
