Yesterday, I volunteered for the Akita Beach Clean-up club's trip to Shimohama beach along the Sea of Japan, with Kei, Heather, Danie, Cherry, Ken, McKenzie, Tomomi, Koudai, Aya, and 4 ABC members. It's about 30 minutes away from AIU by car, and 480円 from Wada to Shimohama station. I thought it was a good opportunity to visit a beach for free, while helping the environment at the same time. ^^
Compared to the beaches I've been to in the Philippines--either relatively private/untouched or extremely commercialized, Shimohama is a bit plain, which can be a good thing. There's hardly any stones or sea weed floating by the shore, so walking around and taking a dip is easier. The sand isn't white like Boracay's or as fine as Puerto Princesa's, but it was still very nice. The water was really cold!
Before we got to the beach, they made us guess how much trash we'd pick up. I thought I had a good number of about 45 PET bottles, 20 cans, and 20 glass bottles, since this was Japan and it couldn't be so bad, but in the end it was surprising. I was only in charge of cans but counting it, we got at least 80! Mostly beer cans, and about a third were slightly burned. You can tell visitor habits from the trash they leave behind.
We also found a tube of Russian toothpaste, and several wrappers of Korean products, which floated from overseas. I guess it's natural to have reached this shore, but it was pretty creepy, still.
After cleaning-up what we could, we had lunch. I had the yakiniku I made the night before! I was scared it'd go bad unless I cooked it soon, so I ended up frying half with soysauce (no idea, lmao, but it turned out yummy in my opinion), and making adobo with the rest. We also had smores. I burnt my first marshmallow :<
Playtime after! Drawing in the sand, dipping our feet in the water, playing ball, making sandcastles and attempting jump shots; it was all really fun. I wouldn't mind doing this again. :)
