TVD 3.16: 1912 - Quick Points

It's so good to have my show back!  This hiatus started out not so bad but by the end I was eagerly anticipating the return.

How wonderful was it to see the brothers actually talking and getting through to one another?  Pretty wonderful, I say.  They actually managed to communicate without the need for stakes or fists.  It felt good to have a more even keel in this episode after the roller coaster ride of the last couple.  Damon genuinely wants to help his little brother and seem to feel bad that he walked away without a backward glance in 1912.  So sweet how Damon said he'd be there by his side as long as he needs him.  Damon really only knows how to love with his entire heart no matter who it's directed at.
Paul did a great job of portraying cold-turkey Stefan.  I found the emotions easier to find in his expression in this episode.
For a Damon-centric flashback, a lot of it was tied up in his relationship with Stefan, which I'm fine with.  I didn't really feel much of the 1912 Damon character arc.  I thought there would be more of how he went from Katherine-induced pining to enjoying the pleasure of female victim.  Maybe it will be continued in upcoming episodes.
I liked Elena and Matt talking.  It's good for her to have a 'normal' buddy in her supernatural life.  It was cute when Matt said it pays to be human in Mystic Falls.  I like the self-awareness.
Nice to see Liz back in action, but I did miss Caroline.

Now for a few questions floating around in my head:

-Is Meredith Fell a supernatural being of some sort?  If so, what is she?  She doesn't feel just human to me.
-Could the witches have put some sort of failsafe when they spelled the Gilbert 'eternity' rings?  We all know they are big on the balance of nature thing, so I'm thinking they did something to limit the rings usefulness.  In this case, it makes total sense that Ric would start having consequences after the many uses they've had since 1864 (if that's when they were created).
-Why would Alaric stab himself?

That's all for now.  I will undoubtedly have more thoughts after my TVD Marathon (which will include this episode).
