MOAR PICSPAM!
My brain has not been operating as well as I'd like lately, so all I have to contribute to the world right now is: MOAR FACES!
LOST: Shannon is one of my favorite characters, she's so lovely and she shines so bright. I love the juxtaposition of her "I'm blonde and beautiful" in the midst of disaster - her body is used by the show runners to jar the audience into "Holy Shit, look how far we've come from Reality!" - but then her arc and her face has so much more in it than those first images of her. This girl knows pain and heartache - and it may not be "I'm an Iraqi torturer" OR "My daddy committed suicide in front of me" OR "I killed my bastard father" ~PAIN, but that doesn't make it any less painful or beautiful.
I think there is a real evolution of Shannon from "Boone's perspective" to "Sayid's perspective" - the more Sayid looks at her, the more she flourishes, the more the camera seems to see her from that perspective and therefore so can we. In the beginning: when the camera is Boone, when HE is her primary viewer, she's jarring - she is beauty in the midst of chaos, insincerity in the midst of disaster. It sucks that she had to be SEEN by a man to be "rewarded" with depth... but since I love Sayid... and frankly, hate the writers for so much I have to spin things positively in order to stomach the female plot-lines of the show, I'd rather read it as: Sayid sees the truth of her. Boone is so bogged down by his twisted love for her, by his possessiveness and NEED for her to be the Symbol of his own person (Boone cannot exist without Shannon, his entire Reality is so shaped by her and his relationship to her, there's very little Shannon to Boone's-perspective-of-Shannon) whereas Sayid (and his PRETTY FACE) can see Shannon's depth. Sayid doesn't rely on Shannon to tell him who he is, he doesn't need her to define his Reality/Meaning/Self for him - so under his Gaze, maybe she can just BE.
GAME OF THRONES: In which I wax poetics with images because I'm just in LOVE with Arya Stark and really, oh flist of mine: is loving a sociopath and serial killer really that unusual around here? This little girl and her EYES! OMG! She's terrifying! It's just AWEsome.
