Summary: The pros and cons of being the youngest.

~*~*~

Dongwoon sighed as he walked down the halls of the Cube building, looking for Junhyung. Sometimes being the youngest really sucked. Any time his elder bandmates didn’t want to do something, they just passed it on down to him.

No one was ever mean about it, but they definitely took a devilish sort of glee in being able to avoid things, Yoseob especially. He got all the perks of looking like the youngest without any of the downsides of actually being the youngest.

He’d thought he’d be able to get out of this particular chore of ‘go fetch’ for once, now that Yoseob and Junhyung were dating. Although Doojoon had asked Dongwoon specifically so that the couple wouldn’t have the opportunity to dally and be late, Dongwoon had still expected Yoseob to waylay him before he could actually leave and take the task for himself.

The entire idea of any of his bandmates dating still weirded Dongwoon out a little, but the more he’d thought about it, the more he’d decided that Hyunseung was right. Knowing the truth might have given him second thoughts about some of their interaction, but both Yoseob and Gikwang still treated him the same way they always had. Neither seemed particularly interested in molesting him or ogling him more than anyone else ever did.

Which was actually kind of insulting when he considered it more. As he stuck his head into yet another empty room, he glanced down at his body. He was an attractive guy. They should have been at least giving him an appreciative look every now and then, right?

If either of them ever had, he’d never noticed.

Gikwang was as goofy as ever, hanging on anyone who encouraged it and not bothering with anyone who didn’t. He did seem to gravitate towards Hyunseung more often than not and now that Dongwoon was aware of it, he could see the interest. Hyunseung didn’t return it that Dongwoon could tell, but that didn’t seem to bother Gikwang.

Dongwoon frowned as he finished checking the floor he was on and headed down the stairs to check the next floor.

It was hard enough dealing with the pitfalls of dating girls, he couldn’t imagine how much worse it must be to like boys instead. He remembered how uncomfortable Gikwang had looked when he’d realized neither Doojoon nor Dongwoon had known. They’d had the power to rip him to shreds in that moment, he knew, just by not accepting things.

With another sigh, Dongwoon buried his hands in his pockets and continued moving from door to door.

He thought about the crush Gikwang insisted Yoseob had had on Doojoon and winced slightly. He’d noticed how temperamental Yoseob had become in recent months - everyone had, after all, it was hard not to notice such a drastic personality switch - but he’d figured it was just a phase that the older boy was going through. He’d never once considered that he could have any blame in it.

A large part of him wanted to corner Yoseob and apologize. Dongwoon hadn’t meant to do anything that would hurt Yoseob. Yoseob was like an older brother to him, always trying to help him improve without making him feel like an incompetent child and playing pranks on the others with him. Yoseob was always up for a game or a joke, never letting himself get too caught up in anything to make time for the real maknae of the band.

When they’d suggested a switch up in the usual fan service, Dongwoon had agreed without much thought. He’d known from the moment he’d auditioned that he’d have to do fan service. It was part and parcel of the life he’d chosen, along with getting up in front of god knew how many people in bad clothes with worse hair and smiling about it. At least Cube was more relaxed and lenient than what he’d heard of a lot of the bigger companies.

The most thought he’d put into it was relief that he’d drawn Doojoon this round of promotions. Given his choice, he always preferred it when he drew Doojoon or Yoseob to the others. They were easy to play off of, giving him the right cues and smoothing the rough edges of his own inexperienced flirting with their easy affection and handsy ways. Gikwang, Hyunseung, and Junhyung were all much more difficult, each for their own reasons.

But easier or not, he’d have never knowingly put Yoseob through months of having to watch ‘DooWoon’ if he’d realized how much it was hurting his friend.

Whatever worries Doojoon and Gikwang had about the relationship between Yoseob and Junhyung, Dongwoon was glad for it. Junhyung seemed to be making a real effort and Yoseob had been happier, smiling real smiles like he hadn’t since the DooSeob had ended and the DooWoon had taken its place.

And as uncomfortable as Dongwoon was with the idea of accidentally walking in on something he really didn’t want to see, he figured it was worth it to see those smiles go all the way up to Yoseob’s eyes again. The world was always slightly off-kilter when Yoseob was unhappy.

Voices reached his ear and Dongwoon sighed in relief as he recognized Junhyung’s.

Finally.

“Do you have any idea how long-” Dongwoon’s eyes widened and he stepped back instinctively at the sight of Junhyung pressing Hyuna up against a dressing table, both of them too occupied with each other to even notice that he’d interrupted. “Hyung.”

He slammed the door shut and stumbled away, his mind completely blank for once.

He was falling back into their own dance studio before he even realized it.

“You didn’t find him?” Doojoon asked, frowning in concern.

Dongwoon opened his mouth to blurt out just what he’d found but then he caught sight of Yoseob across the room, stretching with Gikwang and laughing as Hyunseung draped himself over Gikwang’s back, making them both topple over at Yoseob’s feet.

The blonde glanced up at Doojoon’s voice with a curious look that did nothing to dim the smile on his face. “Did you try the dressing rooms on the second floor? He likes to catnap there sometimes.”

Catnapping wasn’t the only thing Junhyung got up to in those dressing rooms, but Dongwoon couldn’t bring himself to say that out loud.

Junhyung himself saved Dongwoon from having to answer by strolling in behind him, looking as calm and self-confident as usual. Though he gave Dongwoon a hooded look, he didn’t say anything.

“Ah, Junhyung~ You’re late~” Yoseob scolded playfully, straightening up and moving to wrap his arms around Junhyung’s waist and cuddle close. Junhyung let him despite the fact that Yoseob had obviously been working out for a while and was getting sweat all over him.

“Yeah. Sorry, babe.”

Yoseob wrinkled his nose at the name and poked Junhyung’s side. “I’m not a ‘babe’.”

“Habit.” Over Yoseob’s head, Junhyung glanced at Dongwoon, the look on his face daring the maknae to say anything.

Dongwoon bit his lip and looked away, unsure of what to do.

He’d never been in this position before. When a girl cheated on one of his friends, the answer was obvious - tell him she was a skank and let the cards fall where they would. It usually involved letting the guy get falling down drunk while Dongwoon made sure he stayed hydrated and got home safely. Junhyung was the last friend he’d had to do that for, come to think of it.

He had no idea if he should tell Yoseob or try to talk to Junhyung about it first.

Cheating got a lot more complicated when it was his friend cheating on another friend.

“Woonie?”

He blinked as Doojoon waved a hand in his face. “Huh?”

Doojoon grinned at him. “The lights were on, but no one was home.”

For a moment, he hesitated, but he really had no idea what to do and wasn’t that what band leader’s were for anyways? One of the perks of being the youngest was being able to defer to the elders.

Dongwoon leaned forward to whisper in Doojoon’s ear. “When practice is over, I need to talk to you, okay? Without the others overhearing.”

Though he was obviously confused and concerned, Doojoon just nodded. “After practice.”

It helped settle his mind to know that the ultimate decision wouldn’t rest with him.
