There was just enough daylight after we got home yesterday that Lisa and I could take a short walk around the block, which was useful after all of the time spent driving. While rounding the block, we spotted a rabbit.

The Squirrel likes the bird feeder. It hasn't yet managed to get to the feeder itself (it seems to me that climbing a smooth metal pole might be too much for it), but that doesn't mean it hasn't take advantage of the feeder.

A couple of evenings ago, we had a return of a regular visitor to our bird feeding area.

One of the remaining local rabbits ventured forth after the snow melted to investigate the pile of birdseed I set out for the birds.

The chipmunks run away from the pumpkin birdseed holder when I open the front door even slowly, so I put my Sony H2 camera (which has a better zoom than the camera phone) plugged into groundside power and sitting near the door. I need to clean the glass panel in the door, but otherwise I can take photos through it. I even came close to taking one ( Read more... )

A couple of days ago, I walked out to get the mail from the box on the street (it's mostly junk mail) and disturbed one of the local rabbits that was sitting nearby. The rabbit loped into the field to the east of the house and even though I took a seat on the front porch, apparently decided to relax.

We've been concerned that the clearance of the lot west of Fernley House would have driven away the rabbits. Also, because we were away for ten days, the quail that have been in the neighborhood dropped us from their rounds. We started putting out birdseed again, and both rabbits and quail returned.

As the weather starts to warm up slightly (notwithstanding the brief snow a few days ago), the local rabbits are rousing from their burrows and getting up and about. I spotted one when I walked to the Wigwam to get breakfast. (Still only take-out, and I'm uneasy that everyone is now maskless now that Nevada has lifted the official mandate. We think that at least one of the local rabbits has nested either under the wood box or possibly under the house itself. However, this poses a bit of a problem for the bunny, which sometimes finds itself caught between two humans.

As the weather gets colder, the opportunities to sit out on the porch and watch the wildlife grow fewer. A few evenings ago, though, it was warm enough that we were able to sit on the porch for the while and watch birds come to the seed we leave them. Then we saw one of the rabbits.
