I've voted in the Hugo Awards nearly every year since 1984. I've been on the Hugo Administration Subcommittee three times (1993, 1994, 2002). Sometimes the winners seem great to me. On a mailing list about a different set of awards (not the Hugos), there are people making variations of arguments that were old when I was young. I have little patience for people who argue that because an award doesn't reflect their tastes, then the process must be broken. An interesting discussion of how appropriate it is to tell people of your eligibility for popularly-voted SF awards like the Hugo Awards and the Locus Awards. There are clearly people convinced that even mentioning those awards is Evil Campaigning And Must Be Stopped At All Costs, while others see any level of begging for votes as appropriate. I was informed a few weeks ago that SiliCon planned to present me with the Ken Uhland Award for service to Bay Area fandom. In the SF community it seems to be common to launch new things just before Worldcon. Publishers do it. WSFS did it with the new Hugo Awards web site.
