Very belated (and loooooooooooooong) update

Oct 07, 2011 11:40

Time to get back into the swing of posting regularly, I guess. RL's been so tiring that I just haven't had the motivation lately, but it's time to smile, put my head up, and hop back on the horse. Isolating myself socially is a bad thing and I know that, so I'm resolving (again) to do better. Despite the prolonged radio silence, things haven't been ( Read more... )

people are such freaking idiots. it's like "oh, hey, i have a kid so I can't be doing bad shit" but what if the cops are called or something and the poor child SEES. she was two or three it looked like. gorgeous little thing, too, who's probably going to grow up to be a complete punk just like her mama. SO sad and enraging

the remodel could be worse, I suppose, but it's not exactly enjoyable, lol. i just keep telling myself it'll be worth it in the end when we have a full grocery store, bakery, meat counter, bigger craft department and assorted other shinies. most days, i even manage to convince myself of it ;p

the season definitely had some great eps and some not so great ones. i think, had the order been moved around some, it would have worked better (although there were eps that i prefer to pretend don't exist) ... Out of the Blue kind of put the breaks on things near the end. if it had been Normandy/Carenten/Into the Black as the final three, things would have felt a lot more breakneck and grabbing (to me). The pace was just awkward and disjointed to me. Hopefully the 13 ep season this year will be better

i didn't really see Watson as relying on her for information as being frustrated by her inability to give it. he deduced quickly enough that she was from the future (smug, lovable, clever bastard) and he did catch on to Springheel Jack being around before any additional victims were killed. of course he WANTED to know more and was frustrated that she couldn't tell him. it would be like handing him a book in a language he couldn't read: completely maddening ... he was younger and less level-headed then, too, as you said. hadn't been through a few world wars and countless other tribulations to teach him patience and serenity

i hope there are a bunch of little differences that just make you stop for a second ("wait, there are fish in the lake now? THAT'S your twist?"). It would be fun to see, especially where they made a difference in her relationships with the others (since, for the most part, the major events stayed the same: Adam still goes mad because Magnus and Watson didn't help his daughter, same number of Springheel Jack fatalities, etc ... but the little stuff has changed and that means that the Helen Magnus that our Magnus will be replacing is subtly different). Once she rejoins them, the little inconsistencies will be interesting as heck, and I can see the others thinking she's kind of lost it on some level because she's being just a little off and only some of the time. I really can't wait to see how it plays out *iz hopeful*

I do agree re: pace. I think they were just thrown planning in 20 eps vs the regular 13, and had trouble keeping it all put together well enough to make it really roll.

I think I attribute most of my ambivalent feelings toward Watson in the first ep as just the time difference; like you said, he's young and a lot less level-headed and more likely to rush into something.

Ahaha, me too. Once, I sat down and figured out how many times in SG1 they changed the universe without any serious repercussions...starting way back in S1! LOL, but I'd love to see little inconsistencies. Another show I watch did something similar, and when he came back, everything was just a little different and off, and they really made the show work with it. I hope Sanctuary can do the same!

it's weird to see a Watson who isn't all ancient and wise. even by Normandy, he was already in probably his nineties and with so much pain and loss behind him that he'd gentled considerably from a much younger, rasher James who was still pissed at John Druitt for breaking Helen Magnus' heart. As weird as it is to see him so different, I actually consider it really good writing and acting, since it's a progression that makes sense chronologically. It just takes getting used to (and I start to see some of why Sherlock Holmes was written as ambitious, rude, brusque, etc -- one assumes that he'd already started to mellow in the decade and a half or more since taking the Source. he must have been kind of an arrogant, pushy, impatient ass right after taking it)

the little inconsistencies make my day every time and, parts of season 3 aside, I still trust the writers. the only times they've gone wrong so far were the results of executive meddling ("Ashley has to go and we don't care what your plans were!"/"Well, we know you had another 13-ep season planned, but we'll be needing you to do that by half and again in the same time period..." etc) ... here's hoping they can do it again *crosses fingers*
