I had visions of running errands and accomplishing lots of things outside the house this afternoon, but something I ate last night decided to disagree with me today, so looks like I'm not going anywhere for a while. (I don't think it's food poisoning, because I should've gotten sick within about six hours of eating, right?) So, time to work through some places I'm stuck in a fic. I'm still working on a fic set in
mary_flanner's "Scholars and Gentlemen" 'verse. It's going quite well, and I'm to the last long sequence of scenes. (So actually not that close to done, but still. Closer.)
Anyway, there are two things I need to come up with soon so I can work them into these scenes, but I'm at a loss for what they should be. (Yeah, that's clear as mud. You'll see what I mean if you click the cut.)
1. What would Carole give Kurt and Blaine as a gift when they got married? Keeping in mind that Kurt and Blaine are in their late twenties and don't have a house at the moment, though finding one is most definitely on their to-do list. I really want it to be meaningful, but I can't come up with anything.
2. What does Mercedes become when she grows up? I know she lives on the West Coast. I know she doesn't work in entertainment--Rachel is the only one who's still a performer, and I have enough folks with arts-related jobs that I think I've hit my quota. But I want her to have a job that's both fitting and a really good job to have, and yet it can't be anything too unusual, because I've already got a few people with unusual jobs (see, e.g.: Lauren and Brittany).
I've been thinking through the jobs everyone has at least in my version of this 'verse. Many of them won't come up, but I want to know just for my own benefit. (Some of them actually have significant plot impact, and those I'm not going to tell you about. ;) ):
- Finn: high school phys. ed. teacher and coach in Lima-sized town a couple hours from Lima
- Tina: sociology grad student
- Quinn: not telling
- Sam: a little cash crop farming (his father-in-law is the one who owns all the land/business itself), but mostly running one of those farms where you go out and pick your own pumpkins, cut your own Christmas trees, go on hayrides, etc.
- Artie: working his way up the ladder at Pixar
- Lauren: youngest-ever vice president for World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.
- Rachel: been doing off-off Broadway for years, and finally landed a teeny role on Broadway
- Mike: compromised with his dad and double-majored in dance and business, which was a good thing when he got injured--now manages a theater in Cleveland
- Puck: not telling
- Santana: I thought I'd be ironic and go with dentist, but I'm not 100% sold on this. I want something that requires an advanced degree, but not an MD.
- Brittany: assistant to a vedic veterinarian in Fairfield, Iowa (I almost didn't want to give this one away, but if I end up not using it...it has to be known! :) Just look up Fairfield and/or Vedic City. )
- Wes: works for European Council in Brussels
- Mercedes: ???
Thoughts???
