Risk management

I've noted before, possibly not here, that youngbloke has a fairly well developed idea of risk assessment. He's not cautious to the point of timidity, but he does seem to check things over before having a go.

At nursery his friend I jumped off the top step to the ground - 5 or 6 steps in all. YB wanted to jump too, so he stood on the top step and looked carefully at the height. Then he walked down three steps and jumped the rest. He'll stand at the bottom of a climbing frame or ladder and assess the stepping distance before deciding whether or not to have a go. On adventure playgrounds and soft-play we've watched him look carefully at cargo nets to gauge whether his feet will fit. We've not had to rescue him yet.

Today I heard him coming down the stairs with something in his hands. I decided not to say anything - we've told him about having one hand on the stair rail but I can't enforce it all the time, he needs his independence. When he arrived in the living room he had the shallow drawer from his storage unit, with the lego in. oldbloke saw things from the top of the stairs. YB went to the top of the stairs with the drawer and stood for a few moments, thinking. Then he went back into the bedroom, put the drawer down, and returned to the landing. After another period of thought he collected the drawer , sat down on the landing and then came down the stairs on his bum with the drawer in his hands.

I was quite impressed with that.
