The latest Des Moines Register likely voters poll is out, and here’s the numbers from my number-crunching.

I think you have the gist of it Jim.

What I find curious is that the support for Hillary Clinton among older folks (like my mother, for example) is, as you say, because she's someone with a track record, tough and smart. Those are the same terms I saw applied to Dick Cheney in the 2000 election. Interesting to contemplate.

I'm not thrilled with Hillary, for reasons I've already went over.

The mess on the Republican side is a result of the blind support of W. He picked no one to be groomed to follow him into the White House and nobody questioned this. As a result you get a lot of weak wanna-bes. To be viable to win the election someone needs to clearly divorce himself from W's policies. Of course such a stance would keep anyone from the nomination.

On the Dem side of things I am still not sure Hillery is electable. A lot of folks seem to really hate her, in part due to her strengths of being experienced and tough. If the Repubs run Rudy I expect Hillery to win easily due to the loss of the Religious Right. In fact, any of the top Republician contenders has a good chance of diminishing the RR vote. They are finally catching on to the simple fact that none of the people they supported delivered on their promises to them, or even put in a good try.

As I've said before, both Hillary and Obama have major problems that will bite them in the Old South (race for him, gender for her), making their winning the general election harder. I believe that the real reason the Republicans are running so hard against Hillary right now is that they want her to be the nominee, since they believe she can be easily beaten due to her negatives on both sides of the aisle. I don't think it will be that easy, but they also believe there is nothing to the scientific evidence for climate change ( ... )

I think that the Dems have written off the Old South for a while. As LBJ said back in the Civil Rights era, the Democrats have lost the south for at least a generation. The New South, consisting of growing urban areas like Atlanta or areas with growing Latino populations will go with the Democrats.

"...one of the best examples of the much-vaunted Republican lock-step showing that it's held together not by iron chains but silly putty." Best description of the Republican party I have read in a long time.

And while the Democrats are not all honest, trustworthy and such, it is looking like fewer Republicans are, or at least much more inept at hiding things.

I'm 60, and J is 53, and we don't want Clinton. I hope to live to see a woman president, but she isn't the one. I also hope to live to see a person of color as president, and I wish it were Richardson next year.

Track record? Tough? Smart? RICHARDSON! He needs more visibility.

He's a boomer. He's Latino. He has national, international, and state experience. He has legislative and executive experience. People just need to know about him.

He's endorsed by the NRA, which counts against him with some people, but realistically, the NRA can deliver votes.

I've just gone to Richardson's website and read some of his policies. They're admirable but I just don't think they're do-able. I looked in particular at health care, Iraq and GLBT issues. His Iraq policy I agree with although it's pretty much the same as Obama's. The health care plan has some good parts - standardized forms for insurance, for example. But allowing seniors to buy drugs directly from Medicare? How the hell is he going to do that? Mail order ( ... )
