As I've said before, both Hillary and Obama have major problems that will bite them in the Old South (race for him, gender for her), making their winning the general election harder. I believe that the real reason the Republicans are running so hard against Hillary right now is that they want her to be the nominee, since they believe she can be easily beaten due to her negatives on both sides of the aisle. I don't think it will be that easy, but they also believe there is nothing to the scientific evidence for climate change. It will be interesting to see how the RR vote pans out. If some third party dude like Perot runs, he could easily split the Republican vote much like it was in 1992 and 1996, driving the saner voters to the Democrats and splitting the rest. Those elections in the 90s were, in fact, one of the best examples of the much-vaunted Republican lock-step showing that it's held together not by iron chains but silly putty. I have my reservations about this cycle, but I think it will turn out for the best if the majority will just vote their own best interest for a change. There is only so much cheating the righty-tighties can do without it being obvious, and the cheats built into the electronic voting systems failed them spectacularly last year. And that is not to say there are no crooked Democrats, just that the evidence points to much worse from the Republicans.
I think that the Dems have written off the Old South for a while. As LBJ said back in the Civil Rights era, the Democrats have lost the south for at least a generation. The New South, consisting of growing urban areas like Atlanta or areas with growing Latino populations will go with the Democrats.
"...one of the best examples of the much-vaunted Republican lock-step showing that it's held together not by iron chains but silly putty." Best description of the Republican party I have read in a long time.
And while the Democrats are not all honest, trustworthy and such, it is looking like fewer Republicans are, or at least much more inept at hiding things.
