I've decided to buy a new rear wheel for the LHT. I'm getting a Mavic/Alivio from Wiggle for $80 or so. It's not the most heavy duty wheel, but I am not a heavy rider, and so I expect my gear to last longer than gear for a 100kg dude. I think dropping the wheel down the gutter made the buckle in the thing worse, and I was a bit frustrated trying to true it last night!
I also ordered SKS mudguards and a couple of water bottle cages to make it up for the free postage. I expect about $90 to come off my credit card as I had a bit in paypal from the sale of a few things on ebay.
I also need a different front derailluer because I made an error when ordering the 105 - I didn't check the chainline it was designed to work for. The 105 is for 45 mm, but the crankset I got is 50mm... it's a less than ideal situation.
I am thinking that my Nitto randos have too much reach (105mm) and a bit too much drop (120mm) but I love the flared drops, but I understand why the bars look big on my little trucker now. I think that I will have a look around for some options. I could get steel bars and flare the drops out myself. I like the look of the On-One Midge bars but I can't seem to get my hands on any to give them a try.
All this bike stuff. I'm wondering though if I'm just doing this for a distraction because I'm in a rut. I looked at the blog of crazyguyonabike, and he was away for like 425 days cycling around the country. I couldn't do that. First up I have a mortgage to pay, secondly, I would miss the furkids too much, thirdly I wouldn't really want to do it without Nic. I think I like Aushiker's tours better, 5 days here, 14 days there. But I really do want to do a mega-tour, and I don't want to be 45 when I do it! But I think my mega tour can't happen until the mortgage has been very nearly paid and Bender and Barbie are no longer around. So say, in about 12 years... it's either that or take the puppies with us! They would both cope with different aspects of that in different ways. Barbie would probably be happy to sit in the trailer. Bender on the other hand would be all squirmy though he may run with the bikes. He's getting towards middle age now though... he's 4 this year, so by the time we get to go anywhere significant he may not be sprightly enough to run 10k....
On the topic of Barbie, she ran into the fence at Whiteman on Saturday and still appears to have a bit of a sore front leg. I saw her holding it up off the ground this morning. I think no walkies for her tonight. Might just take Bender out on my Couch25k run and see how we go together. Barbie will be upset but I want her leg to feel better. Her gait was a bit uneven at the end of our half hour stroll last night. I think Bender can run about 3k at the moment. My goal is 5k in 10 weeks.... and then I'll go on to 10k ... will be nice if Bender could run it with me.
