I get word-a-day emails from wordsmith dot org. This week's theme is "Words having many unrelated meanings." I don't read them every day, but I saw that today's word was 'trammel' ... and when a single word can evoke Sir Ian McKellen in your head, I suppose you'd best see what that word's about.

trammel
noun:
1. Something that limits or hinders.
2. A fishing net having three layers.
3. An instrument for drawing ellipses.
4. A shackle used in training a horse to amble.
