VVC 2010 vid recs

Aug 25, 2010 19:24

I am super late to this party, but I figure it's better late than never. As I've said before, the vids were outstanding across the board this year, so while I could rec almost every vid from the con, instead I'm going to focus on the ones that I know I'll be going back to rewatch multiple times in the future. I enjoyed many vids not in this list, these just stood out to me.

Premieres Show

Around the Bend by danegen (multi, women) - Arguably the vid of the con for me (though I feel like there are about ten). I love the very purposeful structure of progressing through the various technologies while never failing to show just how much women kick ass. Look how much fun women have! You can't watch this and not feel good. All the historical pictures add some nice depth to it and further reinforce that women don't just kick ass on tv, they do it in real life. I heart this vid. This was when I said to myself, "ohhh shit. Premieres is gonna be good this year."

Seven by hollywoodgrrl and ohvienna (David Lynch films) - Having this back to back with Around the Bend kind of blew my mind. The vidders did a terrific job of blending the source and showing just how absolutely creepy Lynch can be. I love the simmering build to the end, and the last thirty seconds (when all hell breaks loose) is my favorite part. Stunning work.

Caged Bird by sockkpuppett/Luminosity (Last Year at Marienbad) - When this first started playing, I thought, "what is this?" Then I looked at my program and saw it was Lum's, and instantly settled in for what I knew would be a work of art. This vid actually put me in a trance (which I realized as I snapped out of it near the end). It stood out to me in Premieres as something unique, and I notice new things every time I watch it.

Mickey by redina/bunniqula (Hanazakari no Kimitachi e) - This vid is just darling, isn't it? I'm glad the vidder included the subtitles to provide the story, because otherwise I would've been somewhat lost. (It was clear to me that the love interest was a female from moment one.) The main character's struggle and victory is fun to watch.

Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me by bop_radar (Smallville) - Okay, I'd seen pictures of Justin Hartley before, but HOT DAMN. How did I not know how completely yummy he is? I could watch this on mute and still enjoy it. (Though it is better with sound.) Thank you, Bop, for vidding my Id.

Goodbye (offline) by heresluck (Friday Night Lights) - This vid made me move in my chair, y'all. You just can't not when that song is playing. This vid got into my heart from beat one. The vidder did a great job of capturing the battles of all the kids in season four and connecting them together across storylines.

Because I'm Awesome by anoel (Glee) - Kurt! Is awesome! And very very gay! This vid is sparkles and candy.

CITIHALL* by bradcpu (Futurama) - You know, I saw this vid a few times before VVC, but it played so damn well up on the big screen. This vid is epic. It is so seamlessly and perfectly constructed that I see new things every time. This vid, more than any other, I'd say, defined VVC for me this year. And here Brad thought he was going to make a little vid nobody would notice. PSSH.

Things Have Changed by greensilver (Angel) - I'm so glad I convinced her to rebuild the vid after her hard drive ate it. I love, love, love this vid. The song is so perfectly Wesley, and you really feel for him by the end. He dealt with a lot of shit! He had a hard life!

Bloodbuzz Ohio by f1renze (Breaking Bad) - Oh, oh, oh. My other favorite vid of Premieres. God, this is just so masterfully constructed. I really need to finish watching this show.

Left Hand Song (offline) by destina (Far From Heaven) - I haven't seen this movie, but now I really really want to. The color work, in particular, is incredible (I recommend this vid with color commentary by Luminosity). Short and to the point, this vid made me feel for a character I hadn't met in very little time, and that is tough to do.

I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked by sisabet and cappylicious (Smallville) - This vid is surprisingly smart and unsurprisingly enjoyable. It will also earworm you for at least a day and a half.

Other Premieres

Lend Me Your Teeth by greensilver (Doctor Who) - There were two weeping angels vids this year (two!), and while both are great vids, I particularly liked the really creepy song choice here and the build to the end. They are coming to get you!

The Garden by millylicious (Cadavres) - I have no idea what this source is, but the story is told very skillfully. This is a really beautiful (if eerie) vid.

King Rat by cappylicious (multi, military) - I think this is the best vid nobody's talking about. (At least not in my little corner of the internet.) When this aired? It stunned the audience into silence (in the good way). It's such a scathing critique that starts off as a beautiful and harmless ode to the military's place in Americana. The deeper you dig, the uglier it gets. This vid: whoa.

I Wish I Was Queer So I Could Get Chicks by obsessive24 (Supernatural) - Did you know Sam and Dean are gaaaaay? Chuck knows. He sees all!

For Your Entertainment by dualbunny (BSG) - This is the quiet older sibling to SDW's vid (see below), and it's really quite disturbing when you get down to it. To draw from a comment left on Like My Very Own Blood, "Chief, don't love me!"

On the Prowl by sisabet and sweetestdrain (multi, men) - This vid is worth the vast amounts of praise it's getting everywhere. I didn't realize what was happening until it happened, and it kind of knocked me on my ass. Such great food for thought, especially when paired with Women's Work.

Soldier by cappylicious (Skins) - I haven't seen Skins, but now I want to. The vid seems full of quirky, smart, funny kids with real problems we can relate to, and I dig that.

Life of Leisure by greensilver (Veronica Mars) - A fantastic Logan/Veronica vid showing the extreme highs and lows that they could never balance out.

Tightrope by sweetestdrain (Adam Lambert) - Okay, y'all. I am not even on the Adam fanboat, and I have watched this vid an embarrassing number of times (before the con, even!) The vidder managed to take a somewhat repetitive song and turn it into a visual feast that takes us on Adam's journey. You want to come along for this ride.

Club Vivid

Candyman by obsessive24 (Willy Wonka) - Okay, I don't know if this vid makes me want to see the Burton version or glad I didn't, but wow. Wonka is some creepy shit, yo.

At My House(s) by ohvienna (Big Love) - This vid made me immediately go download Big Love. Having watched season one and then rewatched the vid, I love the concept of the family struggling to juggle living across three houses and all the chaos that goes along with it.

Party in the Midlands by millylicious (Legend of the Seeker) - This was the vid I was looking forward to most in Club Vivid. It was my official "yay, let's go to VVC!" song, and we rocked it hard on the dance floor, y'all. I smile every time at the "nodding my head, moving my hips" lines with Kahlan. And Cara = Britney is so perfect. It's such a fun, well made vid that I'll be watching a lot in the future, I know.

Keeps Getting Better by missbreese (Heroes) - You know, I'd forgotten that Kristen Bell was even on this show, and then along came this vid to give me a nice jolt (pun intended) back to reality. Elle, you are effing hot and pure awesome.

For Your Entertainment by sdwolfpup (Arrested Development) - Best opening segment of a vid ever, y/y? This vid makes me SO HAPPY. Gob lives to entertain! Come on!

Bad Romance by sisabet (Smallville) - There was an influx of Smallville vids this year, and they all rocked! Especially this one. Did you know that Lex doesn't want to be friends? It's true.

The Last Firstborn by bananainpyjamas/dragonchic (Appleseed) - When I watched this for the first time at home, my jaw was literally hanging open. This vid knocked me on my ass. DC took her already amazing skills to the next level with this one; it's now on my favorites list from her. Wow.

Get Back by cappylicious (Merlin) - I LOVE THIS VID. Definitely one of my favorites from CV this year. (Damn, was Cappy on fire this year or what?) You think you know Uther, but you clearly don't! Get back!

Take On Me by greensilver (Doctor Who) - This is a truly epic Who vid. As someone who hasn't seen anything pre-Nine, the vidder has made the former doctors accessible and shown the thrill of the journey that I've come to love so much. This vid reminds me why I love the show so much, and it always makes me smile.

Dance Across the Floor by littleheaven70 (Scrubs) - I will admit, part of why I adore this vid is because it reminds me a lot of my Paul McCartney vid (chest bumps! sitcom hilarity!), but it certainly stands on its own merits. How fun is this? I'm just saying.

Non Premiering

O Canada by gigglemonster (multi, Canada) - As you may know, I am not in C6D fandom, nor am I a fan of anything Canadian in particular, but THIS VID? Made me want to stand up and go "\o/ YAY CANADA!" This probably has the most potent pimping power of any C6D vid I've ever, ever seen.

Lightning Field by bradcpu (Legend of the Seeker) - This may just be my favorite vid of Brad's ever, but that feels a bit like trying to pick my favorite child out of a family of thirty. Love, love, love this vid. Love.

Death of a Superhero by akemi42 (Watchmen) - I have no familiarity with Watchmen at all, and this was the first Watchmen vid I saw (out of 5 at VVC, I think?), so thank goodness it was accessible to a dummy like me. I saw others that were very beautifully crafted, but this one gave me the most accessibility in terms of narrative and emotion. I enjoyed getting to talk about it in the Concrit panel we did.

Feel It by millylicious (So You Think You Can Dance) - I think the awesomeness of this vid speaks for itself. Through dance :-)

Runs in the Family by mresundance (True Blood) - Um, this show is very bloody. But then, so are vampires. They kind of can't help it?

Kinneysis by dreamrequiem (Queer as Folk) - Holy freaking crap. I had not seen this vid before, and it BLEW MY MIND. I can safely say it is the hottest vid I have ever seen. (That is, it turned me on like no vid has before.) I'm going to watch this sparingly so it doesn't lose the effect. Wow.

Alcohol by ohvienna (Ashes to Ashes) - I can't believe this was her FIRST VID. The cutting is pristine, the vid is delightful, and wow, I want a drink.

Suffrage by e_transitions (Iron Jawed Angels) - I haven't seen this movie, nor had I even heard of it when I saw the vid, but damn. I need to see this. A very, very powerful vid that is not to be missed.

Down by the Water by danegen (Southland) - This vid single-handedly pimped me into Southland in about twenty seconds. (I've now watched season one; it's lovely.) I instantly connected to the gritty, creepy, raw feel of the vid and just had to see the show right now, damnit.

Love Lockdown by obsessive24 (Battlestar Galactica) - You know, I'd actually forgotten this vid existed! (SHE MAKES A LOT OF VIDS OKAY.) I was reminded with a vengeance at the vidshow, and it knocked me out of my seat (again). She works magic with so little source footage.

I'll Follow You Tonight by cherryice (Shelter) - OMG what is this movie and why have I not seen it! This is beautiful! Boys are in love! The ocean is always a great symbol! This vid deserves exclamation points!

*blinks* Um. I liked a lot of vids? (Seriously, this is maybe half of what I enjoyed. I COULD KEEP GOING.) There are still three hours of vidshows from the con I haven't watched, so I'm sure there are a few more I'd add to this list later, but I figured I should post while I still have the energy. Yay, vids!
