Please go and read this amazing article from the Guardian, which covers a sort of philosophical history of kindness, and how we've created a taboo out of it and label kindness a weakness despite continually being drawn to it. Really, best read in a long time.

God caffeine is such a nasty drug. We had some tea after dinner at our friends' on Saturday night (they're Indian & her spiced tea is astoundingly good) and have been struggling with exhaustion and sleep cycle disturbances ever since - J is even having vision troubles at work today. I keep trying to have a bad day because I blew my paper that was due last night - I didn't finish all the sections and it was still over length and I'll be lucky to get a D - which clearly proves I'm a worthless human being, or you know - something like that.
