two and a half (most definitely idiotic) questions
so, as it stands, i make alright icons. the thing is, they're just "alright." i really want to start experimenting with different things and making the jump from alright to good or even great.
i've got textures down. that stuff is pretty simplistic (to me) and i found a really helpful tutorial. i've spent ages looking through the mems and tags, but i still can't find what i'm looking for. please don't flame me to bits if my questions are stupid.
now:
1) i'm sure the wording is off, but... i want to know how to, uh, "blend" two images together for icons and banners. like, take two seperate images and combine them... i know how to do this the way i do textures, but i don't want to just use rectangles. i want to crop around the edges of people.

2) banners. how do i add textures? i tried doing it the way i do for icons, to no avail. i'm not sure how to copy (ctrl+c) images without making them squares. (i usually crop with the marquee tool.)
also: i have photoshop 7.
